can any of you he-men (or he-women) tell me anything about brakes, specifically the master cylinder?

what i'd like to know is if driver neglect can cause them (it) to malfunction in any way?

The only driver neglect that I can think of to make a master cylinder malfunction would be to letting your brake fluid run out.

I don't think so...Usually if they fail they're just worn out...

If you're losing brake fluid, it's leaking from either the wheel cylinders, bad lines, the calipers or someplace...You aren't supposed to have to ever add brake fluid.

Some times if the break pads wear down to nothing the (insert techinal term here) pad backing can scratch the cylinder or warp it from heat wear.

they also have rubber pistons in them that can wear out an let fluid leak pask . rebuild kits are made for them and if you break the system open you need to bleed the entire system of air starting from the furthest one from the master cylinder.

Master cylinders usually won't fail from driver neglect, most likely it is just worn out. It can however be prematurly failed from the wrong type of fluid being added (can cause seal failure) When changed, be sure to change brake booster (if equiped) Fluid leakage back into the booster from the seal can be detramental to the vaccum diaphram in the booster. If the unit has hydro-boost, it may not be a master cylinder issue but a hydroboost issue.
