As we are getting more & more civilised we are becoming more & more self centered and losing sense of humanity. Are we heading towards good?

I could probably declare myself "non-important" because my entire family passed-away and I am all alone now. (My husband and both my sons passed-away. And pretty much everyone else in my family died too.)...I could take everything "personally." I could internalize all the deaths as a sign that I wasn't very important to my loved ones...I'm not saying that I've never had these types of feelings. (Grief involves working-through a whole gamut of thoughts and feelings and emotions!)...But I know it's not healthy for me to base my worth and value on "who is here" and "who isn't" and "stop there!"...I've always felt that it was my job to gain a sense of my own "worth" whether I'm in a love relationship or not. (Whether I'm surrounded by friends or not!)...And whether I'm accomplishing "major things" in life or not! (Etc.)...I try to stay modest and humble. I don't want to get a "puffed-up head" about anything I do or don't do in life. But I don't want to "shortchange" or "downgrade" myself either... I don't want to be mean and unfair to myself when I know "darn-well" that I deserve a pat on the back for facing my fears or working day and night to finish a job etc.. How do you feel about it? Thanks!

IMHO I may not be important in some grand way but it the little ways, the little needs people have I think my value adds up. The remark the person said about not paying bills is true. You do find out how much people depend on their little piece of you adds to their stream. Like in here if you don't post what are we all going to do for input? It adds up. LOL that is my 2cents worth on the subject. Now tell me who is collecting the pennies. IMHO ?

I am totally important to the people who love me - as they are to me. I must be at least a little important at work cause they sure get unhappy when I call off. We are all important in some ways, many more ways than most of us think about. Being important doesn't necessarily mean being good at something or things but having skills we can use and share does count for self esteem, giving back and paying it forward.

Well everyone here has been important to me, even the ones I don't know. Posting in these forums have helped me get through a long 3 year divorce....After being married for 13 years it was hard being alone with no companion. but true my kids are present but sometimes I needed to have adult conversations and not be dating. SO THERE> You all important to me. Even the strangers who participated in the forums i posted in.

So......I cashed in what I got...I moved and am now trying to earn my place...... After putting in applications for things I would never have conciderd....I find myself very enthusiastic about cooking for a casino.....please wish me luck.....I will need it for the interview. (Friday....10 am) I am totally confident....but, I like a few of you guys....and could use a few of you for your blessings Step up and help a brotha out..... (It is good to be confident but not overconfident. My personal view only.)

If what you told that is truth, I salute you from my heart. Some people help others for getting fame; others do it for doing something good. Both are O.K but 2nd catagory is a little bit more creditable.(As per me)
A selfish man/woman will remain friend (?) so long there is chance of material gain. (In my opinion) 
I have selfish friends and they don't ask anything from me unless you think asking someone to talk to you is considered material gain. Once he/she has to suffer loss, definitely he/she will forget of friendshìp. (As per me) I don't think your friends are selfish rather a well wisher of you. Good luck for you & your friends. :drinks I guess I worded that wrong. I do indeed have selfish friends but I give them the benifit of the doubt. People don't wake up one day and become selfish; they have gone through something bad. I am considered selfish because I didn't have kids or get married but ironically its the religous types that say I am selfish. I do put my needs first and if that makes me selfish so be it. I do charity drives; volunteer work with kids; do sand bagging, built houses for those destroyed in a hurricane; tell people at Christmas to give money to the poor rather than buy me a gift; and keep an open door/ear to anyone that needs it; but some still say I am selfish; however they don't know I do these things. So; I don't judge anyone that others think are selfish as there are things people just don't know about them. A selfish (?) like you is far better than a so called civilised/intelligent(idiot) person. I wish I were also selfish like you!
