Words only have power when the intent is to be derogatory, or to cause harm....responsibility for the collation of letters that form words, is on the speaker.... Words don't have power...INTENT does... Words cut like a double edged sword...intent is in the ears of the listener Wrong....if my intent is to cause you harm, and through nuance, and body language, I say you have a nice hat....my intent, is not even remotely close to the arrangement of the words, if I say/think/feel it with a condescending attitude. But you see, if I called you an ignorant prick and laughed while I was saying it...what is my intent? Whatever you choose.....what is my receiving of your words???? Humour, I would laugh my guts out and say, 'Very perceptive of you, did you read my Bio?". I don't take offence to words...I take a gate, they are more useful...

I very seldom use the word but if I hear of a white person using it I tell them that there are " N " in every race no matter what their color is.

I agree with compassionate, hunter.... however, I am not your keeper, nor the person sat next to us... I am responsible for my actions, my intents, and my thoughts... And to be completely serious, (which is difficult for me), I am so very sensitive about derogatory terms for anyone...any label, any genre, that others are placed in, without consultation to the individual.

i do not believe in "race". biologically, it doesn't exist... we have different cultures in america, but we are all human beings. maybe my background makes me see things a bit differently...but i'm feeling literally ill at a few responses. I agree with lulu. The lines between the races are getting blurrier all the time. At some point we as a nation are going to realize how ridiculous it is to try to categorize people by race. Most of us are a mixture of many different ethnicities. You can't just check one box.

Color is only an issue to those who want it to be an issue. I don't think its the whole nation who has issues. Its only a small amount of people who can't seem to look past what we are instead of who we are. There is good people and bad people, color is not and should not be an issue. This isn't about color. It's about a word that gets glamorized in music and in film. But if the wrong pereon uses it it's front page headlines.
