Because in 1904 baseball players realized a foul ball could ruin the family jewels — but it took until 1940 to admit that their heads were also part of the equipment.

Baseball isn't cricket. 1904 to 1940 vs 1874 to 1974, just goes to show that the English have a totally different way of seeing things than Americans.
