don't worry unless she's a bulldog she wont have any problems just watch her when she begins to give birth she may not rip the sacks open right away just (i know its graphic but i have done this so many times) just rip them open yourself its messy but the puppies could suffocate also try and clean out their noses~Maja

ok there's where i start getting scared. she is a lhaso apso. she had one litter before i got her. i rescued her from the former owner who only got her to breed and they bred her at 6mo old which is way too young, so i am hoping for no complications.

my pom had her first litter at 5 months old with a much larger dog and she just breezed through it don't worry its so natural

If she has already had a litter and they survived, then all you may need to do, is make sure she gets to each pup to wash it, and remove the membrane and placenta...

Keep a few towels handy, and if she gets tired between each pup, and is slow to clean them up, pick up the pup and dry them rather vigorously with the towel, it stimulates them to breathe and to make a sound, which will rouse mum, to start washing the pup.

Help the pups latch on the first time to suckle...keep the area that she whelps in warm and dry, lights reasonably low, and make sure that you have newspaper under the whelping blankets.

Any slow to respond pups, are the ones that need support and a hot water bottle doesn't go astray for them.

well first thing you need to get her enrolled in a lamaz class, then parenting class, then an anger managment class, then a single parents support group, along with any other classes that i may have failed to mention. then you need to have a heart to heart talk with her about maybe giving them up for adoption, if adoption happens a grief managment class may be in the works, and if there is a chance of the pups finding her in the future then be ready to get her into a reconciliation class.
then sit back and let her have the pups.

With long haired dogs it is best to shave her hind quarters around the area so it is much easier for her to get clean. Beleave me you do not want that matted stinking mess. Other than that like other said set her up a spot away from everything and everyone. Then call her to you the first time you pet her after the birth and watch her behavior as she may turn on you.

I used to raise dalmations and poms. The dalmations never were a problem except one mother refusing to nurse the pups after a few days. The poms and other small breeds pups can have a form of diabetis where the pancris(my spelling sucks) is not fully developed. I never tried to keep them alive when they showed the main sign of having seizers/convulsions. I only seen this 2 times out of the many litters my pom had and it was nearly always the runt. Some breeds have breed specific problems. Like the dalmations are know to be born deaf. I had a few born deaf in one ear but not in both which I gave away with no papers. I purchased show dog stock and kept them as pets and raised a few puppies. Not a puppy mill but more than I should have on the dalmations. Everyone want a dalmation puppy because of 101 dalmations but they quickly grow up to very hyper dogs. I always sold my pups with a return to me for rehoming if you can not keep it or can not handle it.
