We all need information that can be trusted. Misinformation and false claims threaten to undermine the success of vaccines and put people's lives at risk.

Nearly a year after the COVID-19 pandemic began, several vaccines have now been rolled out across the world, including some that use new RNA technology that has never been approved for use on humans before. Although all these vaccines have been produced at record speed, with processes run in parallel to save time, there have been many checks and balances to ensure their safety, including being subject to the same scientific and regulatory rigour as any other vaccine.

Any possible risks that may exist are considerably lower than those associated with COVID-19 infection, and vastly outweighed by the benefits of protecting people and preventing the virus from spreading.

ENSURING SAFETY
A candidate vaccine goes through several stages before it can be given to people – right from the exploratory science, to the pre-clinical testing (often on animals), then clinical development (which includes three phases of human trials), and finally regulatory review and approval, manufacturing and quality control.
In pre-clinical studies, a vaccine is tested to see whether it is toxic and how it reacts with the body – this is to identify a safe dose before testing the vaccine candidate in people.

Human trials are designed to spot side effects – these are not the same as temporary short-term reactions such as a headache, sore arms, fatigue, chills and fever, which are not uncommon in other vaccines or injections, and are usually not harmful in the long term. Genuine side effects means anything that is long-lasting and potentially dangerous.

NEW TECHNOLOGY
Two of the new vaccines developed by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna use mRNA technology. The advantages of mRNA vaccines are numerous – they are fast to develop, cheaper and easier to manufacture than more traditional vaccines. Although RNA vaccines have not been used on the public before, this technology has been carefully developed for over a decade and there are many reasons to be reassured that they are safe.

So how does an mRNA vaccine work? RNA (ribonucleic acid) is related to DNA, and mRNA is messenger RNA, part of our genetic code that tells cells what proteins to make. The COVID-19 vaccines exploit this by sending a copy of the messenger RNA belonging to the coronavirus into our cells instructing them to make spike proteins similar to those found on the surface of the COVID-19 virus. This works because the spike protein triggers a strong immune reaction in our bodies.

But the viral RNA does not tamper with our own genetic code because it does not enter the nucleus at the heart of our cells, and so does not come into contact with our DNA. Also RNA disintegrates within about 72 hours.

SIDE EFFECTS
During clinical trials, the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was given to half of a total of 43,500 people, and the Moderna vaccine to around 15,000 of 30,000 people in the trial. Throughout the phase 1, 2 and 3 trials assessing safety, no major side-effects have been reported so far.

Oxford/AstraZeneca’s candidate is a vector vaccine, which also works by inserting part of the genetic code of the virus into cells instructing them to make spike proteins. But unlike mRNA vaccines these instead use a harmless virus to deliver it. In clinical trials of this vaccine there were very rare reports of events associated with inflammation of the nervous system, but it is not clear whether those events were related to the vaccine.

The Task Force for Global Health’s Brighton Collaboration is a group of more than 750 vaccine experts working on vaccine safety, including for COVID-19 vaccines. In partnership with the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) – which, together with Gavi and the World Health Organization (WHO) is driving forward COVID-19 vaccine development – the Brighton Collaboration convened global experts to draft lists of potential adverse events of special interest for COVID-19 vaccine candidates which are reviewed by WHO.

This is just one part of the routine monitoring carried out on use of a new vaccine in the population, to watch out for any unexpected side effects. This includes a wide range of possible side-effects, including any respiratory complications (such as pneumonia or acute respiratory distress syndrome), as well as cardiac (including cardiogenic shock, cardiomyopathy or coronary artery disease), acute renal and hepatic injury, or sepsis.

MYTHS AND MISINFORMATION
As with any drug or vaccine, separating fact from fiction is critical and can be increasingly hard to do with the amount of noise surrounding the safety of COVID-19 vaccines. Rumours circulating on the internet and on social media platforms include, for example, ones claiming that the new vaccines can affect fertility, despite there being no evidence. More importantly, there is no biological possibility that COVID-19 vaccines could affect fertility.

Nor can the vaccines actually give you COVID-19, and there is no biologically plausible mechanism through which they could do so. While there have been anecdotal reports of people appearing to get COVID-19 after the first dose of the vaccine, it is most likely that these patients already had the virus incubating before their shot. Or they were part of the small percentage of people in whom the vaccine failed to trigger an immune response, and then subsequently became infected.

Ultimately safety is paramount throughout the entire vaccine development and the regulatory approval process. Moreover, any possible risks that may exist are considerably lower than those associated with COVID-19 infection, and vastly outweighed by the benefits of protecting people and preventing the virus from spreading.

not getting the vaccine for flippin COVID. 06/05/2020 I had to go to the ER trouble breathing. they took one look at me at the cleveland clinic and swore I had COVID. I argued with the PA and they even wrote a letter saying I had it. I had to basically BEG for the test. The PA claimed they had a woman with only a pain in her stomach that apparently had COVID. She sounded like she was trying to make me afraid and accept their diagnosis. well I refused. I finally got the test and a couple days later they were SUPPOSED to call with the results I had to call and of course it was negative as I expected. I both the letter falsely diagnosing me AND the negative test results from a couple days later. So no.....Im not getting a COVID vaccine.

The CDC called me a moron and I'm still alive. I'll let you know how I die.

Did you read my statement before you replied to me? I said the CDC, not Covid. The CDC, not CORONAVIRUS, has called many people morons.

Rand Paul was accused by Fauci, a strong supporter of the CDC and a professional medical advisor, as being a "moron," a word synonymous with a lower level of intelligence... an offensive and/or discriminatory assumption.

I merely intended to justify my claim: some in the medical profession discriminate. I did not make any assumptions about coronavirus although one might argue, figuratively, coronavirus acts discriminately when confronted with respective anti-bodies, or lack thereof.

it is extremely sad to see what is unfolding in Brazil. Certainly highlights how dangerous covid can become when it is left uncontrolled . There is evidence that the P1 mutation is quickly becoming dominant in Brazil with news of a further mutation P2 (equally concerning ) discovered in Rio . Genetic sequencing appears to demonstrate that these two particular mutations allow covid to spread faster, evade antibodies and reinfect those who have already had covid, producing a more severe form of infection . Younger populations under 50 are now more at risk . It is unclear whether the current vaccine will be effective against P1 and P2.

The amazon jungles have always represented a hot spot for unknown pathogens . Mutation and spread of covid in this region is a little daunting (to me at least ).

It was believed Brazil had developed herd immunity from the first wave but it is becoming clear that this was never the case , or perhaps the level of immunity conveyed by having been infected with covid was inaccurate .

Global support with access to vaccinations is underway .

My mom , grandad and uncle all had the pzifer one with no issue . My mom is allergic to penicillin so was told she could only have the pzifer one .
My dad had the Oxford AstraZeneca one , he felt extremely tired and run down after having it and for days . He thought he was coming down with something , until he spoke to friends of his that had also had the same one and all had the same after affects as my dad .
My middle child and nephew both age 17 both had the AstraZeneca one . They both had it as they both have medical illnesses , and were told they could only have this one as the other one wasn’t suitable cus of their age .

Both of them had horrible reactions ,
my child was in pain all over their body , as well as pain every where to even not be able to move , even just to touch any part of their skin on any part of their body left them in excruciating pain , couldn’t even get out of bed , intense headaches, sickness , couldn’t feed themself ,dizziness, feeling completely withdrawn , this went on for the best part of 2 weeks .
My nephew had really bad headaches and couldn’t stand up and constant sickness , his went in for about a week .
But they’ve now said the AstraZeneca one won’t be given to under 30 year old , so for their second dose I’m not sure what they will be given then . They are both extremely put off having the next one . Having the first one was entirely my kids own decision and my sister wanted my nephew to have it.

Anyone else had any horrible after affects from any of them ?

Sorry to hear that... I wouldn't let my child get another one but yeah...
The net is full with stories and information like the one you posted. Just search. it isn't difficult to find at all. And I'm not talking about the so called 'anti movement' posts, I'm talking about stories from people like what I've posted several times -and in my post above yours- and what you just did.
On FB, forums, wherever.

There have btw also been issues with Pfizer.
