Topic: Does God have a physical or material body? | |
---|---|
Ali, cousin of the Prophet Muhammad, describes the Creator God:
God has prevented minds from imagining himself by abstaining from likeness and form. Places do not contain Him because of His greatness. He is not subjugated by quantities or measurements for his majesty. He is near to us, nothing is closer than Him. He is One, not a gender, race, spirit or a ghost. He is not like things, so there is no description surrounding Him. Whoever limited Him, has counted Him. There is no one attributed to him. Hasn't son or wife. What is in the Bible? |

Several prophets saw a glimpse of God and they did see him with a body. Remember that he created men in his image. However, the scriptures tell us, that one body is not the other. So, his body is not necessarily a physical body but more celestial. God describes himself as a spirit but also as a man of war. So he does have a gender. Both Daniel and John saw Christ as a man of color, and Christ told his disciples, upon them asking him, that he looked like the father. If you see me then you have seen the father also, he said.
The thing is that the Holy bible can't be read as a roman book. It is written as a puzzle and the reader must find the correct text and put them together to get the correct understanding. This is called "precepting" the bible. Therefore, one man must teach another. The bible doesn't tell us much of Christ father, except that he was a carpenter and must have lead a sober life. But his parents were Jews, and they both must have taught him the scriptures at a very young age, because he was teaching the laws in the synagogue. The bible often describes something without using names but does describes it into sufficient details, to give the understanding. For instance: the bible does not use the word "homosexuality" but it will tell us that it's a sin for "one man to lie" with another man or for "a man to lie with another man, as he lies with a woman". It is therefore more difficult to falsify the bible, because we need the understanding and not the noun. No matter what time in history, the meaning is always the same. Also, God had many prophets, priest and Holy men with whom he communicated during history, and the bible is the record of many of these communications. Therefore, the bible contains a book of laws, and prophets and the apocrypha or hidden books. God never communicated directly with the heathens, but he would sometimes instruct a prophet to sent a message to a king or the like. Religion and theology are not in the bible, and therefore we need the precepts and not religion to decipher the bible. After all, there is no need to decipher the bible and only to get the understanding, as the LORD hath it written. |

Several prophets saw a glimpse of God and they did see him with a body. Tdion said: Several prophets saw a glimpse of God. His body is not necessarily a physical body but more celestial. God describes himself as a spirit but also as a man of war. I found that; Celestial body is any natural body outside of the Earth's atmosphere. Examples are the Moon, Sun, and the other planets. Spirit comes from the Latin word for "breath". Spirit is considered a fundamental part of being alive. It is also means the general mood or intent. And the spirit is that part of us that connects, or refuses to connect, to God. Angels are supernatural, benevolent celestial intermediaries between God and humanity. Other roles include protectors and guides for humans, and servants of God. So I think the LORD is unique One, no body like him. He creates all things from Viruses to the planets of the Universe. He doesn't need wife or sons. He created voice that the prophet Musa heard. He was communicated with all prophets via Angels. No prophet saw a glimpse of God, but they saw angle in human body. |

You are right! But I didn't say that the body of God is a celestial body, and I only said more like celestial, and that there are several types of bodies. The body of God is not described in the bible nor the composition of it. We only know that He has a body and we were created in his image.
Further more, I had previously mentioned that the words in the bible often have different meanings and different understandings, from the ones we use. Christ tells us [John 6:63] that the words he speaks are spirit and they are live. That's different from the meanings in i.e. occultism, magic and mysticism. That part that connects as you called it, is the soul. [Gen.: 2:7]. God made the human body first and added the breath of life to it, and man became a living soul. When the breath is disconnected from the body, so is the soul. |

I think it is summed up in what God called himself.
"I AM THAT AM" Though not always defined as such, it can mean 'I AM THAT WHICH EXISTS' If the sum of that which exists, creation would be by subdivision of that which God is. God's body would therefore be the part of him which thinks interfacing with that which could otherwise be acted upon. In terms of perspective, we small portions of everything act upon an environment which is external. "Everything" -the sum of all portions, however, could be considered internal to God. Technically, Moses saw the back parts of a body of God (the Word) -but the same being acted through a different body as Christ (none have seen the Father) -and will again be seen in his "glorious" body when he returns in "power and glory". So, God can interface any way he chooses -in what we consider a body or not -and is not limited to one sort of body as we are. This also means that we are literally made of "God" -are a portion of God by logical separation/subdivision. As written: "At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you." |

God has no physical body. He has a spiritual body, he is a spirit. Spirit is a form of life that is much higher than ours, physical - 1 Corinthians 15:44 (New World Translation): "If there is a physical body, there is also a spiritual one."
Man cannot see God and stay alive, Exodus 33:20 (New World Translation): "... no man can see me and live." There are many things that cannot be seen but that exist. Air - we do not see it, but we know that it exists because we see its action; gravity - we do not see it, but when we drop something, we see its manifestation; smells - we don't see them, but our nose feels them. We often believe in the existence of something that cannot be seen if there is a reason for it. If a person cannot see God, this does not mean that he does not exist. Look around you - the universe, our earth, air, water, plants, animals and ourselves - everything was created by the power and hand of God! |

This also means that we are literally made of "God" -are a portion of God by logical separation/subdivision. As written: "At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you." He is GOD, the One and Unique, the Eternal, Absolute; God begets not, and nor is He begotten. And there is none like unto Him. |

Conversely, some physical things can be seen but are hard to believe even in plain sight. I, for example, when I am looking at the magnificence of the blue ridge mountains, find it unbelievable that they are so large and magnificent, even when I’m staring right at them. |

I am posting this if anyone would like to read, as it seems very relevant this topic and it is a very nice part of the Bible.
Acts 12 1 It was about this time that King Herod arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them. 2 He had James, the brother of John, put to death with the sword. 3 When he saw that this pleased the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter also. This happened during the Feast of Unleavened Bread. 4 After arresting him, he put him in prison, handing him over to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring him out for public trial after the Passover. 5 So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him. 6 The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries stood guard at the entrance. 7 Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. "Quick, get up!" he said, and the chains fell off Peter's wrists. 8 Then the angel said to him, "Put on your clothes and sandals." And Peter did so. "Wrap your cloak around you and follow me," the angel told him. 9 Peter followed him out of the prison, but he had no idea that what the angel was doing was really happening; he thought he was seeing a vision. 10 They passed the first and second guards and came to the iron gate leading to the city. It opened for them by itself, and they went through it. When they had walked the length of one street, suddenly the angel left him. 11 Then Peter came to himself and said, "Now I know without a doubt that the Lord sent his angel and rescued me from Herod's clutches and from everything the Jewish people were anticipating." 12 When this had dawned on him, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered and were praying. 13 Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant girl named Rhoda came to answer the door. 14 When she recognized Peter's voice, she was so overjoyed she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, "Peter is at the door!" 15 "You're out of your mind," they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, "It must be his angel." 16 But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished. 17 Peter motioned with his hand for them to be quiet and described how the Lord had brought him out of prison. "Tell James and the brothers about this," he said, and then he left for another place. 18 In the morning, there was no small commotion among the soldiers as to what had become of Peter. 19 After Herod had a thorough search made for him and did not find him, he cross-examined the guards and ordered that they be executed. Then Herod went from Judea to Caesarea and stayed there a while. 20 He had been quarreling with the people of Tyre and Sidon; they now joined together and sought an audience with him. Having secured the support of Blastus, a trusted personal servant of the king, they asked for peace, because they depended on the king's country for their food supply. 21 On the appointed day Herod, wearing his royal robes, sat on his throne and delivered a public address to the people. 22 They shouted, "This is the voice of a god, not of a man." 23 Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died. 24 But the word of God continued to increase and spread. 25 When Barnabas and Saul had finished their mission, they returned from [1] Jerusalem, taking with them John, also called Mark. |

About (in our image)
In most Bibles written: God said, “Let us make human beings in our image and likeness. In GNT: God said, …they will be like us and resemble us. And in MSG: …make them reflecting our nature. Also in MSG: …he created them godlike, Reflecting God’s nature. He created them male and female. God blessed them. In EXB: God created human beings or Adam in his image [reflecting God’s nature/character and representing him in the world]. I think the meaning of: (in our image) is: Man was created in the best way, a physical body, mind and spirit. God says: We created the human being in the best design. Quran. Man is the most honorable of creatures. This indicates the greatness of man and his dignity with God. God created man in the best form and design, in order to worship, that is to know his Lord and build the earth. Man, by the strength of his mind, is able to worship and good deeds that lead him to eternal life without misery. The image of God is the spiritual capabilities in man, including the ability to think, and the ability to establish relationships with God, with people and with all beings. The image of God doesn't means that there is a man or prophet like God. God, besides Whom there is no god; the King, the Holy, the Giver of peace, the Granter of security, Guardian over all, the Mighty, the Supreme, the Possessor of every greatness. Glory be to Lord from what they set up (with Him). There is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. And He is the Most High, the Most Great. |

"Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live"
Moses saw the back parts of God (the Word)... it was specifically his face -in his glorious body -which humans could not see and live. Many saw the face of the same being as Christ -so it is specifically the face of the "glorious" body. John saw a likeness of that body... but did not see it directly... his eyes were like blazing fire. His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace..... His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance... ...so maybe it would literally be fatal to the human form somehow? |

The phrase "I am that am" is not how God called himself. It was used by Cecil B. DeMille in his movie the "Ten Commandments", but he Got it wrong. The meaning of His name, not mentioned here, is "I Exist" and that of His son "I save".
Over more, the Bible does let us know, how both God and His son look like, and all assumptions are futile. And If the reader wants to know, he must make a serious effort to delve deeper and find out for him/herself. The holy bible is also a book of deep mysteries and one must strive to get the proper knowledge and understanding. Speculations will not help. |

Spiritual bodies do not have faces, legs, arms ...
But they are endowed with glory and radiance. In Ex 33: 20-23 (New World Translation) Jehovah God says to Moses: "After that ... you will see my back." These words do not mean that Moses saw God from behind - his back or the back of his head or something else. After all, God is a spirit. And the spirit has no arms, legs, back ... But the spirit has glory and radiance. And in the same passage God says to Moses: "When my glory is passing by, I will place you in a crevice of the rock, and I will shield you with my hand until I have passed by." God did not say: when will my body pass. He said: when my glory will pass. That is, Moses saw not the back of God, but a reflection of his glory, the feeling of his presence. |

God is not limited to any body -but can express as any form (pillar of fire or smoke, human body as Christ). A "body" is how one interfaces and appears to others at any time. We just happen to be limited to this one for now, but will later be as "the wind" -but also able to interface in some way -and perhaps able to appear as different forms as angels are able. After all we were made "a little lower than the angels" -for now.
It was a body Moses saw -the back parts -and specifically NOT the face -which he had as well as back parts (And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen) -and it is that "glorious" body in which Christ will return... Then the LORD will go out to fight against those nations, as He fights in the day of battle. On that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will be split in two from east to west, forming a great valley, with half the mountain moving to the north and half to the south... Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself. |
