Topic: Anyone into mid-century furniture and decor? | |
---|---|
I have been a fan of this for many years, and only know a handfull of other that are. A friend of mine in Kansas (they now live in Colorado) had a store, all manner of cool stuff.. I didn't know it when I was a kid, but my mom *threw away* a gorgeous Danish Modern sofa... She was tired of it..and wanted a new one.."Early American"..that was popular in the early/ mid 70's... I wish I had been cognizant enough to make her hang onto it..I would have LOVED to have it... |

Love the snottiness.
All centuries, from Medieval to present, have a design, particular to each era. I much prefer, the craftsmanship of furnishings from the mid 1600s, over any of the mass produced crap from the mid 1900s. |

Not really at all sure what "mid century" means in furniture.
Myself, I've gone through a whole range of likes and dislikes. For a time, I wanted the most sleek, modern stuff I could find, and even designed a couch I was going to build (couldn't afford the tools). I was enthralled by Victorian stuff for a bit. I especially wanted one of those classic semi-couch like chaise lounge chairs. Not sure why. I never liked the LOOK of the mainstream stuff, such as the La-z-boy chairs, and especially not the over-stuffed look. All in all, had I the funds, I'd have a house with enough rooms to have a different era of furniture in each, so that I could move from one room to the next, depending on my mood. |

for whatever its worth, I am at this moment sitting in the first chair my parents bought when they got married in 1924. Its a big overstuffed chair with round padded arms and has a matching foot stool with carved wooden legs. I had it reupholstered 15 years ago, and its showing wear, so will have to re-do again. SO COMFORTABLE and sometimes makes me really miss my parents. In the corner I have a very modernistic 1960's floor lamp with three separate "stems" each holding a round ball that covers the light bulb- so there needs to be 3 light bulbs to make it work. looks like aluminum with the switch on the base.

When I was living in Pennsylvania I loved visiting the Amish furniture stores.
I picked up an Ethan Allen 5 leg desk completely refurbished (still have it). Also love the craftsmanship on the handmade furniture. This one store was nothing more than a barn but it had some of the most beautiful furniture I had ever seen. All very reasonably priced. |

I have bought and sold quite a bit of mid century modern furniture over the years. It's still available in this area for very reasonable prices as the local population doesn't see it as collectible, just mom and dad's old stuff.

Does mid century furniture look kind of like IKEA furniture bluegrass?

Around the World
What's called Danish modern does look a bit like the IKEA stuff, but that's just a small part of Mid Century Modern |
