Do you know the oldest lie in America, Senator? Devils don’t come from hell beneath us.

They come from the sky.

Gustave Doré was a popular illustrator of the Bible, among other writings. in 1866 he produced a series of prints based on Biblical events. Well, mostly.

Some of these illustrations were based on Milton's Paradise Lost. Among this collection is an illustration of Lucifer and his rebel angels.



This print was featured in the movie Batman vs Superman, in Lex Luthor's estate. Lex was building a case against Superman by pointing out that devils don't come from beneath the Earth, but from above.

The Scriptures paints a very different picture from that of Milton and Lex Luthor...

CLV Re 12:7 And a battle occurred in heaven. Michael and his messengers battle with the dragon, and the dragon battles, and its messengers.
8 And they are not strong enough for him, neither was their place still found in heaven.

Lucifer and his rebel angels were cast out of Heaven, their home. They never did live in a place called "hell."

In the end, Lex turned the painting upside-down.
