My great grandparents did. I think my grandma was a baby when they came over here. I don't remember, it's only recently that I've been interested in any of it.

Well, it wasn't really advice, merely a suggestion for consideration based on your previous interests.

I know that one set of my ancestors dropped a letter and adopted my current last name. It cause some problems in my geneology searches.
If "papers were lost" it could be that the name was changed for some reason.
One option might be to check for a timeframe and check Ellis Island for immigrants entering the country.



If you can pinpoint the timeframe to the month and year you might check the ships coming to port in NYC during that time. If you check manifests for similar names, you might find them. Its also possible they changed their name to refect a combination of both.

Once you have the mane and the ship you can track where it ported from, which may give you a good local starting point. Transit systems were not like today. People tended to use a nearby port (unless they were on the run).

Another thing you might consider is the earliest first names and middle names of your ancestors. People tend to honor their families with their children's names. Names that are regionally distictive may also help you pinpoint a starting location.

Try to concentrate on materinity lines. While names usually reflect paternal bloodlines, physical features tend to reflect maternal bloodlines.

I went to yugoslavia on holiday years ago, it's lovely, unfortunately it's no more, I went back to a town in the 90's, it was in ruins!
I think they have got most places back to near normal now.

That's really sad.

The German and Irish is mostly from my Mother's side. The Yugoslavian, Scottish, and not sure what else comes from my father's side.

Yes I know Blondey, I was looking a couple weeks ago. Round trip from Boston is only $350 in April. I still need a passport but was thinking the end of April would be a great time to go... my birthday month

I'm planning to stay in Scotland, but will get a euro-pass so I can tour the UK a little. I'll have to check the weather for that time of year, May might be better.

Yes it is cat... The fall and winter season is coming up, I prefer to go when it's warmer. Plus it gives me extra time to get my passport and save a little more for the trip. I have the travel expenses already tucked away, but I'll want a little spending money as well.

Thanks, yes it is. I had changed my mind a while back, but after seeing the fares I decided I needed a nice vacation... my seasonal travel is nice, but I have to work too, haha... not much of a vacation.

I'll check into it. I'm going to be starting my next job shortly, so I might not be able to go until April... and the fares are good then too.
