Just semantically speaking, cheating is usually MISTAKE, but whether something is a MISTAKE or not, can be a matter of opinion, or point of view.

There's a difference between a MISTAKE, and an ACCIDENT.

Cheating is never an accident. It is ALWAYS a choice. And it's very important to recognize that, NOT just so we can punish cheaters.

It's important for those who "stray" to realize that no matter what cover story they come up with, no matter how confused they are when they decide to cheat, and no matter what motivated them to cheat (including abuse by the official mate), that nevertheless, they are ALWAYS who decides what they actively do.

As far as cheating is concerned, the act of cheating, people don't cheat by mistake. They know full well what they are doing and it only becomes a mistake after they get caught or grow a conscious.

Perhaps there are really screwed up people out there that make mistakes on purpose, knowing beforehand that they are making a mistake, yet continue anyway. That says volumes about that person tho.

I know I don't make mistakes on purpose. If I know I am going to make a mistake, I stop myself BEFORE I make the mistake.

Cheating is not a single act. There are many instances during cheating where one can purposely stop themselves. They continue that path by choice and only by choice.
