In the Heart of the Sea (2015)
PG-13 | 2h 2min | Action, Adventure, Biography | 11 December 2015 (USA)

In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville's Moby-Dick. But that told only half the story. "In the Heart of the Sea" reveals the encounter's harrowing aftermath, as the ship's surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down.

Not a new film but I had to replace the copy I had. The 13th Warrior with Antonio Banderas, really gripping.

Oh, I always liked that movie!

Outlander is also good and a similar setting. Even the romantic element is bearable .

Outlander the series? Yes, I love that! It's just a shame they take so long in between seasons. It's a good thing they are now supposed to be older in the series as she's getting on a bit hihi. She's already 40.
I loved the parts in Scotland, but now that they're in the Americas it's very interesting as well.

Actually I meant the film Outlander. It's about a Viking settlement meeting with a humanoid alien monster hunter whose crashed and the dragon-like monster he was carrying is now loose.

Harriet.
What a beautiful movie, and what a courageous woman! I'm still crying.
I just can't ever understand people felt they owned another human being, and didn't even regard them as human beings. So unbelievable it actually hurts.

The movie is SO worth watching.

Yes indeed. I tend to like movies/series with Vikings. Interesting culture.
I'm now thinking, isn't the movie loosely based on Beowulf? Swapping Beowulf for an alien creature and throwing in a few spaceships.

In Outlander (2008) the creature was called a Moorwen. Jim Caviezel was Kainan, the alien warrior. The Moorwen was not being transported, it snuch aboard Kainan's ship then caused his ship to crash.

Moorwen Art

Certainly an awesome film because I love monsters!

Seen a bunch of movies tonight not worth mentioning, BUT....
One was pretty damn good.

County Line (2017)
1h 28min | Action, Drama, Western | 16 June 2017 (USA)
Stars: Tom Wopat, Jeff Fahey, Patricia Richardson

Tough, no nonsense, Marine vet, Alden Rockwell has lost his bid for re-election as sheriff of Maksville County. Reluctantly, he settles into retirement, accepting that Preston, a smooth-talking, more politically savvy cop has taken his place-a cop he mentored. Alden's wife has passed, and still grieving, he spends much of his time tending to the chickens, pigs and house pets she loved on their farm. Even his daughter, Ember, who is following in his military footsteps, and about to deploy, can't ease him from his malaise. Alden's good friend, Sheriff Clint Thorne, has been re-elected in neighboring York County. Alden and Clint go way back, growing up in their respective counties and serving together in Vietnam. Their friendship is solid made up of good-natured banter, sincere concern, and the kind of code passed between two law enforcement professionals who've worked cases all their lives. They'd been the two-county duo for years. It's hard for Alden to sit on the sidelines...and soon he won't be. While investigating a mysterious symbol that's appearing in more and more places in York County, Clint gets a little too close to the truth. Now, Alden jumps into action alone, poking around for answers-and certain people are not pleased. As Alden works to seek the truth and justice for his friend, he's drawn deeper into a web of crime, deceit, corruption, and evil threatening to take over the town-a web only he can untangle.

This is one of those movies where everything comes together and works.
The entire cast worked well together with a competent director.

Yes, I think so. Still, full marks for imagination. Much better than the cgi version with Ray Winston and Angelina Jolie.

I think CGI gets a bad rap.
CGI is only bad when its done wrong. (cue Asylum, Syfy productions)
There are plenty of films made lately that have seemless green screen work.
Nobody complains about it because ya can't tell.

Lots of times people complain about the CGI in a film and it turns out it wasn't CGI at all, merely miniature work or matte painting.

10 films where CGI did NOT suck...

Interstellar (2014)
VFX: DNEG
War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)
VFX: Weta Digital
The Jungle Book (2016)
VFX: MPC, Weta Digital
The Walk (2015)
VFX: Atomic Fiction, RodeoFX, Universal Production Partners
Avengers: End Game (2019)
VFX: ILM, Weta Digital, DNEG, Framestore, Cinesite, Digital Domain, Rise, Lola VFX, Cantina Creative, Capital T, Technicolor VFX, Territory Studio
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017)

Paddington 2 (2017)

Doctor Strange (2016)

Yes, I've seen lots of films and series where the cgi has been impeccable but it has to come second to the writing and storytelling. There's still a lot of things that I've seen where it's primary purpose seems to be to distract from the fact that the script is just not good.
