Do what? Just kidding. Yes, I have a number of solid relationships with no sex. With my employer, my children, you. Just kidding again.
Are you being serious? If so, it's a nonsense question. People only ask it when they aren't happy with the relationship they are in, or that is being proposed to them. Often, the question is the lead in to some effort to manipulate someone else in to doing whatever it is they want. So what's the story here? You either want an asexual relationship (AKA friendship) or you don't. If you don't, and that's what's being offered, then you move on. But I've also seen people who expected to move more quickly to sex than the other person did, proclaim that they were being called upon to put up with an asexual relationship, when it was really just a difference of style in determining compatibility. |

Can you do without sex in a relationship?
The topic title is Intimacy For that reason I am figuring you are talking about a romantic courting type relationship. Abstinence can happen in any relationship at any time and for many reasons. During the courting process abstinence can be an indication of trust issues. Just don't rule out other (more important) psychological barriers. Women have learned that some men have sex and move on leaving her to mend her feelings of hurt by herself. Men may have different reasons for abstaining during the courting period as well. Each relationship has its own reasons. Any normal relationship needs a degree of trust to establish the sexual component. Sex is vital to the relationship but may not be a first priority for some. The question becomes how long you are willing to wait to couple with the one you love? Couples do abstain from sex when they get older as their bodies succumb to the ravages of time. Usually those relationships exist in an after sex love that some feel is what's most important in life. Sex has already happened and the love for one another keeps the relationship alive. So, YES, you can do without sex in a relationship. My question is "Why would you want to?". |

Can you do without sex in a relationship?
Maybe. But only if they're doing without sex too. I'm selfish that way. |

Yes if both parties are doing without, but I would imagine it would be difficult as it goes against human nature. That said there are plenty of examples.
I don't need to know the details but I am wondering if there is a medical reason why sex is not happening. If so there is plenty of pleasure from sexual activity without the full act. This relieves frustrations that would build up otherwise. If it is just a loss of libido this can be temporary. Often caused by child birth or a woman's loss of self esteem as she gets older. There is plenty a man can do to help but pushing for sex is not one of them. You just need to let her know she is still beautiful and give her time. |

transcend to a higher deeper level
I'm curious why women, in general, think that way? Perhaps they never had the right partner? I think that sex (making love) is the highest, deepest form of intimacy two people can express. Two friends can't get any closer without surgery. It seems to be the consensus that sex is bad. Its only bad if you are having it for the wrong reasons or with the wrong person. Making love under the right circumstances, with the right person is the high point of a relationship. There are others but this topic is about sex. I've been in drunken sailor mode and had meaningless sex. I have also been in serious loving relationships and experienced the intimacy of making love. I'll take making love over meaningless sex everytime. Perhaps that is why I am alone now. I could go to a bar and pick someone up but I am looking for something more because there is no comparison with the fulfillment of sex when in love. |

Great point! There are drugs that can cause loss of libido as well. Health is a major factor in reasons for abstaining from sex when in an intimate relationship. There used to be a website that sold vitamins. They offered symptoms of deficiency for each vitamin, mineral and compound. There are many vitamin deficiencies that contribute to libido. Vitamin A is essential for both male and female sex hormone production. For normal reproductive cycles in women adequate availability of Vitamin A are necessary. Men will benefit from Vitamin A as it is vital to sperm production and virility. Vitamin B3 is necessary for energy metabolism, especially anaerobic metabolism which is associated with short, intense bursts of energy. You have those during love making sessions. It also helps with enzyme reactions and for the maintenance of skin and nerve health. Vitamin B3 enhances the sexual flush. This sexual flush increases blood flow to your genitals and intensify your orgasm. Vitamin B6 is a libido enhancer because it helps in controlling elevated prolactin. It also aids in estrogen and testosterone function, as well as production of red blood cells, serotonin, and dopamine. For men with low sperm count Vitamin B6 has been show to help increase these levels. Vitamin B12 is needed so that your body can manufacture red blood cells, support the normal function of your nerve cells and is an energy booster. Vitamin B12 heightens your sex drive, which enhances penile erection by enlarging blood vessels. It also stimulates secretion of histamine needed for orgasm. Vitamin C is important for the synthesis of hormones that are involved in your sexuality, fertility, and aiding you to get turned on. These hormones are androgen, estrogen and progesterone. Vitamin C also strengthens your immune system, keeps your joints limber, and protects against day-to-day stress. Vitamin E is considered the โSex Vitaminโ and is sure to add spice to your sex life. Vitamin E increases blood flow and oxygen to your genitalia. It also is a key player in the production of your sex hormones to give you that sex drive boost. Itโs also an anti-aging antioxidant, which helps with your youthfulness and vitality. Folic Acid is a key vitamin when it comes to reproduction. If you are looking to get pregnant both you and your spouse should make sure you are getting your daily allowance of folic acid. Folic acid helps prevent birth defects and is tied to an increased sperm count in men. Magnesium helps in the production of sex hormones like androgen and estrogen that regulate the urge down there. This mineral has documented aphrodisiac effects, which can improve your libido and sexual performance. It also helps to calm and relax you so that you can have an increased sex drive. Selenium is essential to sperm production. Nearly half, 50%, of the selenium in your or or your spouses body is in the testes and seminal ducts. Guys lose selenium in their semen when they ejaculate. The importance of Selenium is its role in the antioxidant activity of Vitamin E, the โSex Vitaminโ. Zinc is required for the production of testosterone and production of sperm. Healthy testosterone levels in both men and women are important to a healthy sex drive. Zinc also aids in prostrate health. Your prostrate has a large amount of zinc, which helps regulate prostatic fluid. When there is a deficiency of zinc this hurts your prostate. Without a healthy prostate, you canโt have a healthy sex life. ^^^ Source ^^^ Men have loss of libido too. They don't like to admit it. |
