Because everything differs from state to state some native tribes were treated worse than others...but I can say it was a shame to watch a lot of natives get given a nice patch of land to only sell it for less then its value to the white man...only to complain twenty years later that too many white people are on the reservation ...I have a lot of native friends and I told so many of them to not sell...but free stuff is easy to get rid of..

That is really sad ... It should've been made impossible to sell.
White people on a reservation? slaphead

...the Flathead reservation is some of the most beautiful territory in Montana ...can't blame the white man for wanting it or buying it...sadly the natives get their money and land shortly after they turn 18...and at that age...even white kids would not be responsible...I do agree that the land should not have been sellable...or if anything it should have only been sold to the tribe...jmoflowerforyou

Yeah, exactly, or let the tribe look after it till they're 21 or better even, 25. White people getting their hands on native American land should be forbidden.
18 is indeed way too young. Just kids. And kids that age want money so they can get the latest mobile phone, a car and an Xbox and play the last Assassin's Creed or GTA.
Quite stupid. You can't even drink a beer in the States until you're 21, but they do give you land to manage at 18 slaphead
Crying shame ...

I would love to hear responses in this thread from Native American
Tribal representatives if it were possible .

But I still think that every post in this thread gave me more of an aerial perspective of the Native American issue, and greater understanding.

Sincere thanks to all the contributors in this thread flowerforyou

I grew up in Montana literally a stones throw from a reservatuon. My mom's entire family is white but grew up on the reservation. I know I am naive but I never saw skin color or nationality when I saw people. I fell in love with a native man when I was very young (he was young as well) and my oldest is half native.
I think that the native nation is like any other people.. there are the good and the bad. The bad have a tendency to get the most publicity, and the good are often overlooked.
My ex is a good guy. We were kids and much to young for the relationship we got into, but he is a good dad to our daughter and a good friend to me. He is an alcoholic, and I am a non drinker so this was a huge roadblock for us.

Point in my rambling story is this.. there are good and bad in all people. And it is who we choose to focus on that will get the attention..

Found out yesterday that till well in the 1980s native American women were sterilized without their consent and without them knowing, when they went in for another procedure. Often when they were just some 15-17 yrs old ...
So many Indian women could never bear children as they didn't tie their tubes, which could be restored, but their uterus was removed (hysterectomy).

Barbaric, totally utterly unbelievable in what's supposed to be a 1st world country, and incredibly sad ...
That sort of thing makes me understand why native Americans aren't particularly trusting of white Americans, and don't take to kindly to them. ohwell

Crystal, I sure would like to know the source of your information.

By the way, I wouldn't draw any conclusions about reality from watching a fictional show, such as Longmire is.

Yes I too would like to know where she got such info? I'm half Native American and I hav NEVER heard of such a thing to hav happened to Native American women. I would also question how any woman, world wide. Could get a hysterectomy and "not even know it"....What I find most alarming about that so called "barbaric" info is that a WOMAN herself could believe that something so serious could hav been done to ones body, such as a "hysterectomy" and ever go unnoticed...Shocking!!!!
WOWWW! ! ! ! "Without them even knowing"...............I'm curious Crystal, would you know if u got ur tubes tied? Or worse yet, a hysterectomy performed on you???

I'm quite concerned about her now...I'm thinkin she should take a good, hard look at her own body to see if she has any unexplained scars on her. Who knows, she may hav had a kidney removed and not hav even known it. shocked

I'm watching the series Longmire, and in it they paint quite the picture of the situation between white Americans and native Americans.
What I get from the series -which is set in Wyoming close to an Indian reservation, it's not much different from white Americans and African Americans. Lot of finger pointing and blaming and victimizing themselves. Stuff like "You're picking on me because I'm an Indian."
I spose based on many white people treating them like dirt still?

I'm wondering, is the situation really that bad?

The atrocities committed by white Euro-Trash against the indigenous Native American Population are even worse than I could fit into a post. Genocide, Cultural Annihilation, & Seizing Their Land[Property].Don't ask my Great Father that question or you might get a barrel full of buckshot up your butt;} Rumor has it that he spent his last years, hiding out in his barn with an old loaded rifle waiting to ambush any white individual who walked onto "His Property"! He thought The White Man was out to take his land & so they did as they told him they would for non-payment of taxes.

I would say there is difference in where ... I do believe they are trying to take away land from the Indians again... and the government does not want to abide by the treaties anymore ... I watch two elderly American Indians on their own property... they have what they need to live ... horses and other animals and they live off the land ... and I am talking elderly women ... that have been on this land since they where born ... but now the government wants it and want them to move ... very sad story ... can only shake head in disgust ... an the TPP their looking to pass ...rant

I am White. I am going to say it. Those of us who have white, European ancestry we had some horrible folks in out family tree. Not all the British settlers were cruel to the Natives but a majority of them were. British colonials had a mindset about people who were different from them. They could not see the value of the Natives and therefor set out to dehumanize them just as they did the African slaves. The Natives got a raw deal. The best way to bring this into light is to do a study on White Privilege. After taking two different college courses that focused on this mindset, my eyes have been opened from a deep sleep. The Natives who remain on the Reservations today still live in an unacceptable poverty. :-(
