Most ppl think Dutch und Deutsch are similar To me, Dutch sounds like someone is speaking german with some intense accent...like every other word sounds just like a german word, though I can't make out any clear meaning. |

I don't know how Dutch sounds to non Dutch, but I think German sounds more intense. German is very guttural, very powerful language .. not unlike Japanese. Take Rammstein .. so not the same in English and in Dutch it would sound utterly ridiculous. |

I was trying to say that Dutch 'sounds vaguely German' but also 'not quite like any German I've ever heard'. Almost like someone was speaking German with a very strange, heavy accent. Several times in my life, when in contact with travellers, I found myself trying to make out the German someone seemed to be speaking, and thinking to myself "wow, his accent is so unusual, I can't make anything out" only to realize eventually that he wasn't actually speaking German at all, but Dutch. |

Dutch and German isn't all that much alike ... When Germans start talking to me (we get an awful lot of German tourists here, coastal area, beaches etc.) I haven't a clue what they're waffling on about :/ I'm doing a course in German, but I kinda gave up on it, because German is just so bluddy difficult! Some words are the same in Dutch and German, but mean something completely different, so very confusing. Always makes me feel like, just learn to speak English and be done with it! |

Have you ever tried duolingo? Its a free app that takes you on a complete learning program, from beginner level on up. Its surprisingly good. They also have a web-based interface for people who don't want to do in on a smartphone. |

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about! And since I'm not at all familiar with Dutch, I've been confused by this several times. I wonder how the similarities/differences between Dutch/German compare to, say, Spanish/Italian, or Spanish/Portuguese. I've heard other people say similar things about those languages. |

Have you ever tried duolingo? Its a free app that takes you on a complete learning program, from beginner level on up. Its surprisingly good. They also have a web-based interface for people who don't want to do in on a smartphone. No, may look into that.. I thought I was doing alright and getting the hang of it, till I was working at a campsite, reception desk, all these German tourists ... I was totally lost. At some point there were some English guests, YES PLEASE! Can we have more of those?!?! It's really silly, cos I've spoken Indonesian quite fluently, was learning some Pitjatjara (Aboriginal language), once spoke French reasonably OK, but German... just doesn't seem to work.. I get what you say about Spanish/Italian/ Portuguese.. Well... both my English and Dutch vocab databases are shutting down on me... time to go to bed... half 2 here! |

Good night Crystal...and I confirm...I gave up on Dutch...although I think it is still easier to understand than Flemish. Yeah, Flemish .. difficult for me as well .. They use weird words, and expressions that are alien to the Dutch, even though the words themselves are basically Dutch. Actually think Dutch would be easier to learn than German, cause we don't have des, der, die, das anymore. We used to have that as well, but not anymore. That's what makes German so difficult - for me anyways-, constantly having to think whether it's 'einer' or 'eine' or 'ein' etc. and all the rules that come with it (the prepositions and extra -n or -s in some cases etc.) Funny enough I was told that English is the most difficult to learn for dyslexic ppl, cos of the discrepancy between spelling and phonetics ... |

Haha intact swiss German is hard to learn because of the accent ufff!!!i learnt "hoch deutsch" then once I stepped into the switzerland boarder. Believe me I thought for one second that I had learnt "no German at all"
