I didn't even wanna sell 'em in my pagan/wicca shop at the time NemesisNow (wholesaler) had a real nice looking Ouija Board, but I didn't want innocent ppl, looking for a thrill, ending up in chit, just because I had sold it to them.
We warned our kids to steer clear from it, did they listen? |

I believe this lady^^is "more in tune" with this sort of thing than the rest of us mere mortals, so I am going to take her advice and stay the hell away from them ...We had one when I was a kid and this is what I remember...My sister and I goofed around with it a couple of times...It disappeared...End of story...I don't even remember how we acquired the damn thing... |

Ouija Board? No, I don't speak French. The name of the board is the French yes, and the German yes. Not the origin of the board itself. It has. Ancient China, Rome, Greece all did a form of spirit writing. But the modern board known as the Ouija has been around since the 1800's created during the seance craze. Which eventually was bought by Parker Bros. in turn bought by Hasbro. The planchettes, which is the heart shaped device you put your fingers on was around longer than the board, originally they were used for spirit writing, and not running across the board to the different letters. I actually became fascinated with it back in the 80's when I watched the movie Witchboard. But all the times I've used it, nothing has happened. But I still find it fascinating, and a great device for horror movies and books. |

@ Torgo and WaterSign...I found this great article from Smithsonian.com (and Wiki confirms it) about the history of the Ouija Board...Here are a couple of excerpts on both the origin and the name...WaterSIgn, this article will answer all you questions...
From the article... The real history of the Ouija board is just about as mysterious as how the “game” works. Ouija historian Robert Murch has been researching the story of the board since 1992; when he started his research, he says, no one really knew anything about its origins, which struck him as odd: “For such an iconic thing that strikes both fear and wonder in American culture, how can no one know where it came from?” The Ouija board, in fact, came straight out of the American 19th century obsession with spiritualism, the belief that the dead are able to communicate with the living. In 1886, the fledgling Associated Press reported on a new phenomenon taking over the spiritualists’ camps in Ohio, the talking board; it was, for all intents and purposes, a Ouija board, with letters, numbers and a planchette-like device to point to them. The article went far and wide, but it was Charles Kennard of Baltimore, Maryland who acted on it. In 1890, he pulled together a group of four other investors—including Elijah Bond, a local attorney, and Col. Washington Bowie, a surveyor—to start the Kennard Novelty Company to exclusively make and market these new talking boards. None of the men were spiritualists, really, but they were all of them keen businessmen and they’d identified a niche. But they didn’t have the Ouija board yet—the Kennard talking board lacked a name. Contrary to popular belief, “Ouija” is not a combination of the French for “yes,” oui, and the German ja. Murch says, based on his research, it was Bond’s sister-in-law, Helen Peters (who was, Bond said, a “strong medium”), who supplied the now instantly recognizable handle. Sitting around the table, they asked the board what they should call it; the name “Ouija” came through and, when they asked what that meant, the board replied, “Good luck.” Eerie and cryptic—but for the fact that Peters acknowledged that she was wearing a locket bearing the picture of a woman, the name “Ouija” above her head. That’s the story that emerged from the Ouija founders’ letters; it’s very possible that the woman in the locket was famous author and popular women’s rights activist Ouida, whom Peters admired, and that “Ouija” was just a misreading of that. http://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/the-strange-and-mysterious-history-of-the-ouija-board-5860627/?no-ist and from wiki... During the late 19th century, planchettes were widely sold as a novelty. The planchette was founded by an Indian philosopher by the name of Rohit Vishnuraj. The businessmen Elijah Bond and Jishnu Thyagarajan[not in citation given] had the idea to patent a planchette sold with a board on which the alphabet was printed. The patentees filed on May 28, 1890 for patent protection and thus had invented the first Ouija board. Issue date on the patent was February 10, 1891. They received U.S. Patent 446,054. Bond was an attorney and was an inventor of other objects in addition to this device. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ouija |

my brother and I use to use that board.I wont even say its name.I have seen some horrific things during those times.I have seen my brothers appearance change into a woman. When we both realized nothing good came from calling on spirits we tried to throw the board away. The next day it was found under the bed.My brother burnt it.The next day it was in the linen press.I really don't know what happened to it because it vanished.Over the years my brother would return to the occult knowing too well of the dangers.Where is my brother now...he died at the age of 38.please stay away from the board.what may seem as innocent may be the worst mistake of your life

When we were in our teens my sister and I used the board. It freaked us out and vowed to never use it again. The thing that you put your hands on was spelling out people's names that we knew.
|
|
|
|
of course it was spelling names you knew......
because you were moving it the planchette is moved due to the ideomotor response done unconsciously not by some cosmic force that is why it could be so convincing to some |
