Obama Just Contradicted Himself About His Strategy Against ISIS

The U.S. plans to "degrade and destroy" the Islamic militant group ISIS until it is no longer a force in the Middle East, President Barack Obama said on Wednesday.

But later in the same news conference, the president said the aim of a potential international coalition to combat ISIS was to reach "the point where it is a manageable problem."



The apparent contradiction comes days after the president said — in a remark that earned him a heap of criticism — "We don't have a strategy yet" about confronting the extremist group over time.

Islamic State (aka ISIL or ISIS) released a video on Tuesday showing the beheading of U.S. journalist Steven Sotloff. He was the second American hostage to be killed within weeks, in retaliation for what ISIS said were U.S. airstrikes in Iraq.

“The bottom line is this: Our objective is clear, and that is to degrade and destroy (Islamic State) so that it’s no longer a threat not just to Iraq but also the region and to the United States," Obama said.

This statement jibes with the aggressive remarks Secretary of State John Kerry made after the killing of U.S. journalist James Foley by ISIS:

If Obama said "I breathe oxygen", you guys would be incensed and outraged that he didn't give the chemical makeup of what oxygen is, so that he could use that comment to educate poor children in terrible inner-city schools.
