Topic: Effective treatment of dog cataract? | |
---|---|
My dog 10 years old, minuature bullterrier, has cataract.
It is not serious but I am worried she may become blind someday. In Japan, there is not cure for that. Vets suggest she should take eye drops but they are not sure if its effective enough. I post this because I would like to know if there is an effective treatment for it in any country. Thank you for reading. |

I would hazard a guess that it is the same for pets,
as humans..surgically removing the cataract. |

I have an 8 yr old Lab/Chow that developed a cataract about 6 years ago. The vet said they could operate and she would have a 50/50 chance of regaining the sight in the right eye. It was also $500. It has never bothered her and she catches rats and squirrels. She will jump if you sneak up on her right side. Unless it is both eyes the dog will adapt. If you have 2 dogs that were raised together and one does go blind completely the other one will probably become the eyes for both of them. I have seen it in dogs and even in horses.

i have two dogs. a boxer 5 yrs and a lab 10 yrs. the lab has developed cataract in both eyes though not quite blind yet.the boxer being younger tends to take advantage and is constantly bothering the lab. i separate them most of the time but fail to do so at all times.i have tried a number of vets but they offer no hope.

If your dog goes blind he will likely go into depression if he is left alone. He would need a companion dog who would be with him, even leashed together to show him where the food and water is.
I had a dog who went blind and he got so depressed he quit eating even though he could find the dish. It was so sad. Another dog we had that was blind had a companion dog who looked after him and alerted him when a car would come into the driveway and would keep him from getting lost. |
