Topic: Are you a doomsday prepper?

On the hit show 'Doomsday Preppers,' people are building underground steel bunkers and stockpiling 50,000 pounds of food. Are they crazy – or just prepared?

Over the past few years, spurred by fears of environmental catastrophe, economic collapse, terrorism, and maybe just a smidge of anti-government paranoia, a growing number of Americans - 3 million, by one estimate - have started preparing for the apocalypse. They stockpile food, load up on semiautomatics, pack so-called "bugout bags" for when the **** hits the fan (or "wtshtf," in the parlance). They've given birth to a multibillion-dollar industry, spanning books, DVDs, survival gear, conventions, even ancillary industries like solar-generator design and bunker construction. And lately, it's gone mainstream enough to make it to prime time.

No, but I watch the shows about them, one always learns something :-)

If I could afford it, I would stash a couple years worth of supplies.

Don't like that show.
It's full of insane people. whoa

It's also a waste of money.
If there's a doomsday no one will survive.

Why hide inside a bunker trying to delay the inevitable?

All the fun's on the outside of that bunker during a doomsday.

Those folks are nuts. The only thing that's going to get ya through any type of "doomsday" scenario is banding together as a community, not hiding in some hole in the ground.

If there is going to be a doomsday, I don't think I want to be around afterwards. Besides, we are all going to die anyway.

I suspect that the real ddomsday preppers are in government & banking and have already taken to their bunkers, not to fire the missiles, but to hide out till it blows over, which it probably never will. LMAO

I saw a lecture at university about how the worlds glaciers are dwindling and they provide much of the world with fresh water, especially asia. Imagine what is going to happen when billions of people have no fresh water.

The lecturer said that we are withdrawing all the money from natues bank account, not putting anything back, and when that money runs out, there will be 9 billion people on the earth.

I would say that canibalism will be one way that people will survive. History has shown that in times of great famine, people have and will eat people.

Believe me if you are hungry enough you will even eat your own children.

These people storing food are very wise but I believe that a runaway greenhouse effect will set the surface of the earth on fire and earth will become like venus. It's just a matter of the co2 level to reach the point where the suns heat cannot escape the atmosphere, then you better get out your disco shoes, cause it's burn baby burn.

Venus is a planet with a runaway greenhouse effect and the surface temperatures are around 500 degrees on a cold day.

Venus never had an Earthlike Climate!
It was always like it is now!
So spare the Anxietymaking!laugh

Besides,it hasn't been warming here for the last sixteen years, despite an increase of CO2!

In an interview with the German news publication Der Spiegel, meteorologist Hans von Storch said that scientists are so puzzled by the 15-year standstill in global warming that if the trend continues their models could be “fundamentally wrong.”

“If things continue as they have been, in five years, at the latest, we will need to acknowledge that something is fundamentally wrong with our climate models,” Storch told Der Spiegel. “A 20-year pause in global warming does not occur in a single modeled scenario. But even today, we are finding it very difficult to reconcile actual temperature trends with our expectations.”

Environmentalists have been increasingly calling on President Obama to address global warming before it becomes irreversible. The World Bank reported that global temperatures could rise by 4 degrees Celsius over the next century if greenhouse gas emissions aren’t brought under control. Many world leaders are committed to limit the increase to 2 degrees Celsius.

“The scientists tell us that if the world warms by two degrees Centigrade (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) — warming which may be reached in 20 to 30 years — that will cause widespread food shortages, unprecedented heat waves, and more intense cyclones,” said World Bank president Jim Yong Kim in a statement.

Yet global warming skeptics have pointed to a halt in global warming about 15 years ago. Climate scientists have recently started lowering their warming forecasts.

“There are two conceivable explanations — and neither is very pleasant for us,” said Storch. “The first possibility is that less global warming is occurring than expected because greenhouse gases, especially CO2, have less of an effect than we have assumed. This wouldn’t mean that there is no man-made greenhouse effect, but simply that our effect on climate events is not as great as we have believed.”

“The other possibility is that, in our simulations, we have underestimated how much the climate fluctuates owing to natural causes,” Storch added.

Venues atmosphere is co2 and it is so hot because the suns heat cannot escape.

co2 is a greenhouse gas and is building up in our atmosphere every second as trillion of tons in volume with no end in sight.

The problem with co2 is that it is invisible to the naked eye.

I just cannot get that song by Shiza Minelli out of my head now...

People who eat people are the hungriest people in the world.

you really need to do some serious reading!

Venus was never like Earth, even at the outset,so your absurd comparisons just do not cut it!

Everyone here is talking extremes.... that is NOT the fear!

A prepper is prepared for the chaos that ensues during ANY crisis. Chaos is the key!

Who are the good guys? The bad guys? What water is fit to drink? Where does the next meal come from? Does money have value? Where and what constitutes safe shelter?

Crisis is not the end, it's a bottom you must rebuild from!

Prepping is nothing but an ounce of prevention against a pound of cure.

To be unprepared for a crisis is nothing short of stupidity!

Stupidity?...While individual IQs may differ from the mean, I find that the mean IQ of most nations suggests that they need watering twice a week.

As far as the you-know-what hitting the fan, it is hitting the fan of the bad guys as we speak and they are scrambling to get to their bunkers! They don't know what to do next, because try as they might, they cannot defeat what has become a global unity of PEOPLE.

In unity there is strength and with enough unity there is NOTHING a determined people can't do! Recognize your strength. It lies in unity not just with your next door neighbour, but with your brothers and sisters across the land and around the world! There is no need to fight. All that's needed is a show of absolute and resolute national unity, undivided by religious or political (or favorite sport teams) differences.

Stand together and you WIN...divided you will fall.

You are THE PEOPLE...It's YOUR COUNTRY...You do not belong to it; IT BELONGS TO YOU...IT'S YOUR PROPERTY...TAKE IT!!,,, UNITE!!

Don't think of the following song as a stupid old love song...Think of it as a love song for your NATION; Your new National Anthem...A global anthem!..."UNITED WE STAND!"

There can never be unity when leadership and media are devisive influences patronized and accepted as truths by a silent majority

I see unity during a crisis all the time.

The people will unite in times of crisis. Sure there are a few who will take advantage of others, there are looters etc. but they are the minority. The looters are the ones who live in fear.

If you are prepared to survive a crisis, you are prepared to lend a helping hand to people who need help. If you are not, and you are in fear, you may resort to being one of the looters.

Prepping is not hiding in a hole. It is being prepared.

I'm confused...Doomsday doesn't incur a large survival rate, typically, think of the dinosaurs.

What are you going to do? Hide in a cave? Even that will be leveled if we have an extinction level event.

True. Doomsday was just a word.

But yeh, if the earth is going to be blasted with a death ray from the sun or a death star ship, no reason to prepare to survive, if we are all going to die.

Wouldn't you like to be a prepper too?

No, but when I lived in Florida, I stocked a weeks worth of water and canned foods in the pantry as well as extra charcoal, matches and tons of candles for the grill. I was thankful for them after my first hurricane, cause those were the first things to fly off the shelves once landfall was predicted. So, I can appreciate it to some extent.
