Topic: Cultural Misunderstandings | |
---|---|
Back when I first crashed …err… landed on planet Earth, I contacted my cousin who arrived on Earth before I did. He warned me that I would encounter cultural confusion as I settled down on your planet. He was right. A woman living in the UK mistook me for a dog. A woman in the USA reacted in a harsh way when I mentioned the hair on a woman’s legs. How was I to know that leg hair is a taboo topic on your planet? Anyway, this site is an international site. So, I was wondering if the humans here have experienced cultural confusion, too. Can you share an example of a cultural misunderstanding that has taken place on this site? |

I am human and humans confuse the crap out of me no matter what! Right when you think something makes sense long comes a human to make it confusing again! Cats in a microwave oven are entertainment for humans. For Melmakians its dinner! Then again there are the Chinese... Now in dog society to sniff another's butt is 'hello.' To Humans, a dog's nose up the butt is a cold unwelcome surprise. Now here is a good one, Martians and humans. We almost didn't get it in our heads that Martians were not here for peace.
We found out thankfully that country music DOES serve a purpose! And it isn't only Martians it affects negatively! It seems a lot of Human hybrids can't stand it as well as three other alien species. If I remember it right wasn't that the primary reason why that nasty looking little booger called E.T. bailed off of this planet? And in New York you never know what you will find trolling the streets after midnight! R.O.U.S's maybe? |

Relatives visited from Ohio/Pennsylvania...
Took em to a rodeo down the road....a world class one. A cousin started pointing at a giant belt buckle on a dude and saying "I want one of those...can I get one at Wal-Mart?"...where we just bought his cheap cowboy hat souvenier... I had to explain that it an actual trophy for bull riders and to shut his mouth...."you don't buy them...you win them. Don't say that kind of thing out loud." When he realized that everyone was looking at him like a retard...he obeyed. Didn't help that his hair was a green crew cut with leopard print dyed into it on a soft and pale fat boy. Just a cultural difference....like trying to order a chicken fried steak in Pennsylvania....it don't fly. |

Yes, once this local guy on mingle was emailing me through mingle and I thought he was a really cute asian(from his misleading pic) but turns out he was an indian with one giant crazy eyebrow that crossed most of his forehead. I kind of got scared because in his pic I thought he was like chinese and when I confronted him he said indians are actually asians, which was a lesson learned for me. Their physical traits are totally different though. In my opinion it as a very bad experience for me. It was also a huge letdown because its not often you find someone thats really "local" and "attractive". Its like natures way of saying to eff off. I have hope now though.

Indians are from Asia....heads up Honey.
I get your point though...hard to get past a mono-brow that looks like two caterpillars locked in a fight to the death. |

Yeah, now I know, I didn't know that, in my defense I'm a genius who loathes geography, it was my worst subject and I get lost in my own neighborhood. Ask anyone. I am not even allowed to talk and drive its like against the Simone law of driving. |

It is always amazeing to me how people move around and always seems that they think the last place they lived is far superior in everything than where they moved to. And they chose to be there so i don't know why they are dogging the local culture.

I have found a few not on mingle, but when my hubby visited Australia.
Firstly he almost died when he saw women sitting breast feeding in public. For some reason he became very embarrased, so much so that one of our friends waited to get home to feed her baby so i am guessing that it is not normal in some parts of America for women to feed babies in public I have six children and never thought twice about feeding it is just natural. Well so I thought. Here in hospitals formula is not encouraged at all. We also thought he was rude as we live in a not very busy place and while we where all standing back waiting for our things at the airport, he just sort of pushed in front of people and grabbed our stuff We all hid in embarrrassment, to us it seemed very rude to not just wait. Until we arrived in America and found that at LA airport we would have had to wait forever, which we just about did The other things was when we went anywhere for some reason he thought we would be served or asked if we needed help. here you pretty much help yourself, nobody normally has the staff to run around after you without you ask them to. But when we visited America, wherever you went people helped you . |

And they chose to be there so i don't know why they are dogging the local culture. Of course, when you are talking about Texas, people KNOW they have finally found the best and dig into the culture! That's my story from Houston and I'm stickin' to it, ya'all! |

Not so much a misunderstanding as a lesson in appreciation...There is a small convenience store in my town...They sell everything including gasoline for my car and lawn mower...Because they are convenient and open 24/7, I am a regular customer The store is owned and operated by a family from India...Every year they give me a Christmas gift in appreciation for my business

That's my story from Houston and I'm stickin' to it, ya'all! Yeah, right. How is Texas doing when it comes to supplying its growing human population with drinking water? |
