Paris Peace Conference 1919: Zionists defeat Christian leaders’ calls for self-determination
After the war, the victors met in a peace conference and agreed to a set of Peace Accords that addressed, among many issues, the fate of Ottoman Empire’s Middle East territories. The Allies stripped the defeated Empire of its Middle Eastern holdings and divided them between Britain and France, which were to hold them under a “mandate” system until the populations were “ready” for self-government. Britain got the mandate over Palestine. Zionists, including Brandeis, Felix Frankfurter, the World Zionist Organization, and an American delegation, went to the conference to lobby for a Jewish “home”[43] in Palestine and to push for Balfour wording to be incorporated in the peace accords.[44] The official U.S. delegation to the Peace Conference also contained a number of highly placed Zionists. Distinguished American Christians posted in the Middle East, who consistently supported self-determination, went to Paris to oppose Zionists. Numerous prominent Christian leaders in the U.S. – including two of the most celebrated pastors of their day, Harry Emerson Fosdick and Henry Sloane Coffin[45] – also opposed Zionism. However, as a pro-Israel author notes, they were “simply outgunned” by Zionists.[46] The most prominent American in the Middle East at the time, Dr. Howard Bliss, President of Beirut’s Syrian Protestant College (later to become the American University of Beirut), traveled to Paris to urge forming a commission to determine what the people of the Middle East wanted for themselves, a suggestion that was embraced by the U.S. diplomatic staff in Paris.[47] Princeton Professor Philip Brown, in Cairo for the YMCA, provided requested reports to the U.S. State Department on what Zionism's impact would be on Palestine. He stated that it would be disastrous for both Arabs and Jews and went to Paris to lobby against it.[48] William Westermann, director of the State Department’s Western Asia Division, which covered the region, similarly opposed the Zionist position. He wrote that "[it] impinges upon the rights and the desires of most of the Arab population of Palestine.” Westermann and other US diplomats felt that Arab claims were much more in line with Wilson’s principles of self-determination and circulated Arab material.[49] President Wilson decided to send a commission to Palestine to investigate the situation in person. After spending six weeks in the area interviewing both Jews and Palestinians, the commission, known as the King-Crane commission, recommended against the Zionist position of unlimited immigration of Jews to make Palestine a distinctly Jewish state.[50] The commissioners stated that the erection of a Jewish state in Palestine could be accomplished only with “the gravest trespass upon the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine,” pointing out that to subject the Palestinians “to steady financial and social pressure to surrender the land, would be a gross violation of the principle [of self-determination] and of the peoples’ rights…”[51] They went on to point out that “the well-being and development” of the people in the region formed “a sacred trust,” that the people should become completely free, and that the national governments “should derive their authority from the initiative and free choice of the native populations.”[52] The report stated said that meetings with Jewish representatives made it clear that "the Zionists looked forward to a practically complete dispossession of the present non-Jewish inhabitants of Palestine,” concluded that armed force would be required to accomplish this, and urged the Peace Conference to dismiss the Zionist proposals.[53] The commission recommended that "the project for making Palestine distinctly a Jewish commonwealth should be given up.”[54] Zionists through Brandeis dominated the situation, however, and the report was suppressed until after the Peace Accords were enacted. As a pro-Israel historian noted, “with the burial of the King-Crane Report, a major obstacle in the Zionist path disappeared.”[55] The US delegation was forced to follow Zionist directives.[56] Ultimately, the mandate over Palestine given to Britain, supported the Zionist project and included the Balfour language. According to the mandate, Britain would be “responsible for putting into effect the [Balfour] declaration … in favor of the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, it being clearly understood that nothing should be done which might prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine….” Clearly some people didn't clearly understand what clearly understood meant. |

Israel is generally portrayed by the U.S. mass media as the victim of terrorism, a characterization that is in part correct. Economic and military aid is consistently exaggerated by ideological haters of Israel. The aid Israel receives is only a tiny part of the US budget and almost every penny of it is earmarked to be spent on US goods and services so it all comes right back to the good old USA. Israel is not at all unique in that the US spends lavishly on many other countries and many of those are not nearly as strong long term allies and many others such as Afghanistan. N Korea and Pakistan have tremendous waste fraud and abuse and terrible human rights records. Israel does not commit terrorism and has laws that it enforces strictly to guard against any terrorist attacks and prosecute any individual vigilantes. All of the supposed attacks which Israel-haters bandy about are military actions taken by Israel to defend themselves usually against real terrorist attacks (attacks intently focused on killing innocent men women and children as a political and military tactic) by real terrorists like Hezbollah, Hamas, Al=Aqsa, Islamic Jihad... etc...etc... This is why the record is "too substantial". It is too substantially obvious that Israel is the victim of terrorism and never institutes offensive actions and always demonstrates incredible restraint in trying not to harm innocent civilians and treats injured civilians on either side in their hospitals and with the greatest compassion. OK - here is the bottom line. When the Israeli's lay down their arms they are brutally attacked with terrorist techniques aimed at killing Israeli civilians. When Palestinians lay down their arms on the other hand there are prolonged periods of peace and Israel never attacks. There you have it. Governor Romney again repeated his assertion that culture is a key reason why Israel's economy is much stronger than that of the Palestinian territories. It is apparent that both US Presidential candidates understand the essence of the conflict pretty well. That whenever the Palestinians choose to lay down their arms and stop killing innocent Israeli civilians that there has always been peace and opportunities for economic development and prosperity for the Palestinians. Of course the candidates are intelligent and articulate and are aware of the ridiculous hyperbole and false claims of "Israeli terrorism" from the Palestinian camp. Nice to see that people are not buying the hysterical Jew/Zionist/Israeli bashing any longer. Let the Palestinians lay down their arms, teach peace and tolerance to their children instead of hate and violence and give their poor children a chance at the kind of excellent quality of life available for Israeli citizens!

Hezbollah, Hamas, Al-Aqsa, Islamic Jihad, Fatah, PLO are PROUD to kill innocent people in cold blood! They are proud of indiscriminate rocket attacks on schools and homes! They throw parties over mass killings at social events, cafe and bus bombings! Meanwhile, Israel (which is the only place in the region where women and children are treated with full human rights and there is freedom of religion and freedom of the press) is castigated for having checkpoints to try to prevent arms and bomb smuggling! And Israel's policies have always prohibited any form of terrorism and show the utmost concern for the sanctity of all human freedoms and preservation of human life.
I think that after the London and Madrid bombings, after Al-Qaeda took out the World Trade Center killing thousands of innocent people abroad, and after so many similar radical Islamic terrorist attacks around the world in Russia and India and elsewhere that finally the world had woken up to the true nature of the middle east conflict. That it is not about land at all and that checkpoints at airports or borders or main thoroughfares while inconvenient do never justify terrorist attacks. People everywhere now have a lot of personal experience and will never tolerate killing of innocent people as a guerilla warfare tactic. Everyone has come to understand Israel's very real need to defend herself and her citizens and the very real need for Israel to exist to provide a safe haven for Jewish people. None but the hardcore Israel haters and antisemites are going to give any credence to the false claims against Israel's checkpoints and defensive measures. It is over for giving a pass to the Israel haters while simultaneously failing to point out the real origin of the ongoing conflict which is Jew-hatred - pure and simple intolerance of a free Jewish state in the middle east. They object to Israel because it is a Jewish state. That is pure bigotry. |
