This question has come as a result of several different conversations that I've had in recent past. I'm currently undecided on the matter, which is new for me...
So whatcha think, and more importantly how do you arrive at that conclusion?

Knowing the difference between a lie and truth has nothing to do with being honest. This is too simple of a topic for me to try to explain.

Well if it is simple, it ought be simple to explain. I would appreciate seeing that done.

Me too don't see any relation between honesty & knowing truth or lie.

Well, if there is no relation then surely that can be stated. I mean, I didn't expect that anyone would doubt whether honesty and lies were related. I mean, really? How is it possible that they're not tied together at the hip, so to speak?
I'm puzzled by the very notion.

Surely we would all agree that one cannot give honest testimony and be lying at the same time?

I know what a lie is.......... there has been times in my Life when someone has gone above & beyond to have me belive in their actions as well as their words ....when in fact it was all a scam or a LIE!

Ok. So what is a lie? I mean what makes a lie what it is?

It was a perfectly valid question given the context of the discussion. This is a philosophy forum. Dictionaries show the common uses of the terms. It does not show whether or not those uses make much sense when critically examined.
The topic is about whether or not an honest person can not know what a lie is. In order to assess the question, we must first set out what constitutes being "honest" and what constitutes being a "lie", and then think about how it works(or not). |

A more valid question would be if a dishonest person can not know what a lie is... And if that dishonest person doesn't know what a lie is, can they even be dishonest or lie? So my question is, "Do you know what a lie is?" |

I agree that that is also a valid question, and an excellent one I might add. Kudos. What is your view concerning your own question, or mine, or both? And if that dishonest person doesn't know what a lie is, can they even be dishonest or lie?
This is two questions. To the first, I would answer in the affirmative. To the second, I would also answer in the affirmative. So my question is, "Do you know what a lie is?"

I would say that in order to lie one must engage in a deliberate misrepresention of their own belief and one always knows when they're doing it. |
