Topic: HELP WITH READING AND UNDERSTANDING THE BIBLE. | |
---|---|
I have once again, started to try to read, the entire bible. Right now im in Genesis, and its already getting hard for me to understand. Is there a place, that would be a better starting place, for me? Is it necessary that I read about who had kids, how many they had, when they died, when their kids died, ect....
I have a VERY SHORT attenion span, and have recently devoted my Sunday afternoons, to reading the bible. But its really hard for me to stay with it, when its all so confusing. All the names, this kid, that kids kids, when they all died....its not only confusing...its really boring. NOT GOOD! I want to keep my promise, to read the bible, on Sunday afternoons, but im already finding it difficult. What do you suggest? God bless you! |

Genesis is nothing but the knowledge of how everything came to be. You could skip Genesis if it's to rough. If you wish to know the knowledge of how to achieve the gift of Heaven, start with the New Testament. And if you just wish to know the history of how it all went down, then read the old testament here and there. And no it's not to important to know so and so lived so many years and had this many kids and or what not. |

It is important to know the old covenant God made with us to understand why the new covenant is the way it is. |

Here's a web site that has a nice feature. It gives a summary of every chapter in a block above the chapter. So this way you can get an idea of what the chapter is all about before you read it.
http://www.easyenglish.info/booklist/genesis.htm However, a word of warning,... This "Easy English" bible is written in an interpretative format that may not be the interpretations that you would personally get from reading the original text yourself. The interpretations they give are pretty standard Christian interpretations. (i.e. they puff up what they like to emphasize and ignore any potential interpretive problems or inconsistencies) In case you didn't know, I'm not likely to agree with the standard interpretations, but that's just me. One thing to keep in mind is that anytime you read literature from religious sites, they are always going to attempt to play up the ideals they'd like for you to believe and agree with, and they will basically ignore, or play down, anything at all that doesn't fit that picture. |

The single best starting point might be a book called
Biblical Literacy which is in libraries but is also available used from Amazon for $6. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0688142974/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=A1QWS0M2H4O2M0 |

Ok, Why is it that in Genisus 19:26 But Lots wife looked back, and she was a pillar of salt.
What was the reasoning, or significance, for her to be turned into a pillar of salt, when she looked back? JUst to see if she would obey? And why would he kill her, if she disobeyed him? Is that what God did, at that time? Wipe our entire nations, and kill people, if they sinned, or disobeyed him? Please explain. |

The Bible on DVD, or CD may help.
Some of them narrate the scriptures. Just put the DVD, or CD in and listen.... |

Please explain. I don't know why she was particularly turned into a pillar of salt. But that was punishment for her disobedience to God. Death is the only reward for sin Luv. 17And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed. |

Please explain. There are so many sources out there that will give 'answers' and 'interpretations', so true study comes very much from what is placed upon our heart and our instincts in terms of understanding I am no expert at all. What is on my heart though, is that those times were times of spiritual warfare, much like we now fight physical warfare. I do believe to 'save' masses of souls , God allowed other souls to be taken by way of their mortal life. Lots family were spiritually treasonous , from the daughters to the mother, and yet God gave them a chance above the other sodomites. I believe Gods chance was a chance to turn completely away from the sins of sodom that the sodomites had come to cherish above God and looking back symbolized an unwillingness or incapability to give up that idolization. This second chance was the last chance, in my opinion, mortally speaking. God was consistent in what he said would happen and he followed through with what had been agreed. |

Luv....Gotquestions.org, is one of the FEW TRUSTED
websites that line up with scripture. I agree with what is shared on there.... again, it does not go contrary to God's Word, but instead, lines up with God's Word. You may ask questions to get answers on there , also. ...............Question: "Why was Lot's wife turned into a pillar of salt?".................. Answer: Genesis 19 tells the story of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Lot, Abraham’s nephew, lived in Sodom with his family. His daughters were engaged to local men. Lot was sitting at the gate of Sodom, the area where financial and judicial transactions took place, when two angels came into town. Lot invited them to stay with his family. After a rather exciting evening, the angels made sure Lot, his wife, and his two daughters left before God destroyed the city (Genesis 19:13). As they fled, the angels warned them, "Escape for your life! Do not look behind you, and do not stay anywhere in the valley; escape to the mountains, or you will be swept away" (Genesis 19:17). Lot ran, his daughters close behind. “But his wife, from behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt” (Genesis 19:26). She lagged behind. She turned and watched the flaming sulfur fall from the sky, consuming everything she valued. Then it consumed her. The Hebrew for “looked back” means more than to glance over one’s shoulder. It means to regard, to consider, to pay attention to. The Scriptures don’t say whether her death was a punishment for valuing her old life so much that she hesitated in obeying, or if it was a simple consequence of her reluctance to leave her life quickly. Either she identified too much with the city—and joined it—or she neglected to fully obey God’s warning and she died. We’re fortunate to receive similar warnings. Ephesians 4:22-24 tells us to take off the old self which is ruled by sin and be renewed, putting on the new self that is in the likeness of God. Similarly, 1 John 5:16 says that willful, deliberate sin can lead to death. Lot’s wife wasn’t able to accept that. What she chose to value in her heart led her to sin, which led to her death. The Bible isn’t clear whether Lot’s wife was covered in the salt that rained down with the brimstone or if her remains were dusted with a coating of salt later. But it is interesting that she is described as a “pillar.” The Hebrew for pillar is natsiyb, which refers to a garrison or a deputy, something set to watch over something else. The image of Lot’s wife standing watch over the Dead Sea area—where to this day no life can exist—is a poignant reminder to us NOT to look back or turn back from the profession of faith we have made, but to follow Christ without hesitation and abide in His love. http://www.gotquestions.org/pillar-of-salt.html |
