The dome of the capitol building stands seven feet higher than that of the nation's Capitol in Washington, D.C. And the San Jacinto Monument is taller than the Washington Monument. Indeed Nicer, too... |

I knew I learned something in high school I could use later in life Also it amazes me in my talking with other people from different states, how little they know about their state history. This is true. Out of all the 50 states, Texans are the most proud of their home state. Here's the deal... Most states have state history and you do learn about it in school. But it's trivial fact, by and large. Most of the other states' history is about events that happened in association with US history. The fact that Texas was a nation first and a state later makes it bigger than that (all jokes about everything being bigger in Texas aside.) I've been visiting places and learning about Texas history since moving here and it's different. Think Washington, Goliad, San Jacinto... Other states just don't HAVE that kind of history associated with them outside of being part of the conglomerate US whole. I'm starting to actually "get it" - both the history and the reason people are so darn proud of being Texans - and it's pretty amazing. The sad part for us transplants is that we can't really claim that for ourselves except by adoptive status. The GREAT part for us is that native Texans welcome us transplants and make us one of their own, regardless. Proud, honored and happy to be here? Yep! |

Texas has always been, at least to us born here, a state of mind, as much as it is a 'place'. It's buried deep in our souls, much like the American Indian and their heritage passed generation to generation. It just 'is'. |
