Topic: "it has served us well…this myth of Christ" Pope LeoX, 1 | |

Interesting what Christians grasp onto….
In a book written 1500 years ago by primitive hut dwellers… (500 years and approximately 25 generations of verbal passed down myth-stories after Jesus may or may not have lived) God tells man not to eat an apple, but a talking snake tells man to eat it, so.. man listens to the talking snake…. God is upset (a loving, forgiving god ??), so he immaculately inseminates a woman (if not by her choice–rape ??, if she was married to Joseph at the time—adultery ??) and she gives birth to him/his son so he can suffer and die for us (Jesus chooses to die for us–suicide ??) because we sinned when we listened to the talking snake and ate an apple.. what a strange story… I contend that we are all atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than religious people do. When religious “believers” understand why they dismiss all possible gods and religions except for their one “true” god , they will understand why I dismiss theirs. The day people lose the fear of the threat of burning in hell will be the first intellectually free day of their life. Christianity and its rules and threats and prejudices was created by hut-dwellers thousands of years ago in order to gain power over their fellow human beings. New religions continue to crop up constantly in much the same way Christianity originally did- look at the Mormons, Scientologists and other less-successful religions. Christianity actually is like many religions, resurrection, virgin birth, god lives in heaven, etc…. The basis of religion and believing in Jesus is fear…. fear of going to hell (another man made myth–hell) fear of what happens to us when we die. fear of God punishing us… (many examples especially in the old testament) all of the stories, myths, fairytales about Jesus, including Jesus is God, were written hundreds of years after his death by primitive hut dwellers…. look at the big picture, Jesus is just another God in a long line of man-made Gods… during Jesus time, mankind was moving from polytheism to monotheism…. there were many “messiahs” ( 7 or 8 major ones) during Jesus life… Constantine helped Christianity become the big religion by making it the official religion of Rome. Again, think about how ridiculous and unbelievable all of the other gods and religions are to you, and you will see why the Jesus myth is just another imaginary… (another word for faith) belief system. Two things are needed to become a religious person…. 1) exposure to religion… you are a Christian because you are surrounded by it, if you lived in a Hindu community you would gravitate toward.. I think you get my drift 2) a personal need and weakness…. religious people are less responsible for their actions and consequences, they lean on religion to help them deal with life, and use it as an excuse for their actions (religion is imaginary, a delusion, therefore actually a type of psychosis) The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. wasnt this posted before?
1. I was exposed to christianity. 2. I am no more or less 'weak' than any other human being. I am definitely responsible for my own actions If I rob a bank, I am responsible for that, even though I can aknowledge that the authorities who find out will bring justice against my action not sure why the concept is so misunderstood, the lack of correlation between self responsbility and a belief in some higher authority,,, |

Msharmony,
I think you are one of the few people who acknowledge self-responsibility as a Christian. I know literally a handful of others. 99% of the Christians I know prefer to blame any of their actions on everything but themselves. I see Satan as a scapegoat for people's lack of responsibility. |

"it has served us well…this myth of Christ" Pope LeoX Served who well? Obviously the man who is at the top of this religious organization is going to think that. It most certainly didn't serve the midwives of Europe who were tortured and burned as witches for hundreds of years in the name of Christ. Also, did the Pope actually say, "This myth of Christ"? Are we getting a true confession from the church finally? |

one last thing if everyone followed the 10 commandments and no one can deny this this world would actually be a place to live in if understand what im saying ,we definitley wouldnt be where we are we would be further That's probably true, but when was the last time you met a follower of the Abrahamic Religious that followed the 10 commandments? Most of the Abrahamic religions fight with each other. The Christian crusaders didn't seem to think much of the commandment that says, "Thou shalt not kill", nor did the Christians who tortured and burned witches. Also, there are many religions throughout the world that teach equivalent, or better, moral values. The Wiccan's for example simply say, "Do as ye will but harm none". There you go. A very simple guideline that, if followed, would result in world peace. In fact, if "God" is supposed to be "all-wise" the Wiccan decree seems far wiser than having "Ten Commandments" don't you think? After all, in one simple statement everything is automatically covered. Harm none. That's wiser than having to break it up into ten different commandments. So if we all become Wiccans the world would be a super fantastic place to live. You see, that argument will work with almost any religion in principle. |

Yes Satan is the cause of alot of people's behaviours and actions, but never a reasoning. It still boils down to our own choice to either do the sinful action or not. Nothing can MAKE anyone do anything, it is still our own responsibility to do the right thing. |

Ok, so which 10 commandments are you talking about anyway? The original 10 or the heavily edited and changed version that made it into today's bible? Just out of morbid curiousity... |

Yes Satan is the cause of alot of people's behaviours and actions, but never a reasoning. It still boils down to our own choice to either do the sinful action or not. Nothing can MAKE anyone do anything, it is still our own responsibility to do the right thing. That's an oxymoronic statement. How can Satan be the 'cause' of anyone's actions if people always have the free will to make their own choices? In fact, you continually accuse everyone who refuses to accept that the ancient Hebrews speak for God, but there is clearly nothing 'sinful' about disbelieving the words of a bunch of mortal men. That's not the same as refusing to obey a "God" who actually makes himself known. So until your God actually shows himself, it's absurd to believe that he would "pass judgment" on anyone for not obeying him. He hasn't directly communicated with them and therefore cannot claim that they refused him. At best, in his infinite wisdom he could clearly see that all they are doing is refusing to believe the tall tales of other mortal men. In fact, you reject the tall tales of many mortal men. Just like the OP suggests, "When religious 'believers' understand why they dismiss all possible gods and religions except for their one 'true' god , they will understand why I dismiss theirs." There's no reason to believe that the ancient Hebrews had the "only" connection with the creator of ALL humanity. In fact, such a notion is actually quite unrealistic and unbelievable. If there is a creator of all of humanity who is attempting to communicate with us, he/she/it would surely attempt to communicate with all cultures equally. To believe that the creator of humanity would single out a particular culture and political nation as its "chosen" people is unreasonable. The very fact that these ancient Hebrews make such a claim is reason to highly suspect their religious bigotry. |

Ummmm nope That's about the best argument I've ever heard from the religious bigots. At least it's straight-forward and to the point. The Abrahamic mythology has God commanding people to kill religious heathens, as well as homosexuals. Not to mention unruly children. And let's not forget to stone the people to death who refuse to worship him on the sabbath too! So the 10 Commandments don't have much merit in a fable where the God continually overrides his own commandment via further directives. It's an oxymoronic religion by it's own proclamation. Which "God" are we supposed to listen to? The schizophrenic God who says, "Thou shalt not kill"? Or the schizophrenic God that directs us to stone people to death for every reason under the sun? It's a picture of a God that sends mixed messages and can't make up his mind from one moment to the next. Are you sure this God isn't a woman? |
