Topic: +10yr. old cat purring constantly and very loud

I've noticed lately that my cat is purring much louder and much more frequently lately. I recently moved and he stays mostly in the bathroom or under my blankets but he's always purring and pretty loud.

Is this a bad sign?

He's been very playful, so he seems to be enjoying the place.

I haven't noticed any sore spots or anything unusual when petting him.

He does get nervous when he hears the neighbors sometimes, but he's kinda always been like that.

He's probably not used to his new surroundings. Though, if you feel something is wrong with him, taking him to a vet, rather than asking on a site like this is going to be much more helpful.

Dont quote me on this...but somewhere in some magazine, I read that a cat purr is also used for meditation like purposes.

Heres a web page to check out....

Crazy Cat was doing that when he first moved in. Thats my acquired cat. My boarder thought it would be nice to get her friend's cat out of the pound because her friend was going to get a bigger apartment so that she could take her cat back. It didn't work out that way though because they told her that she would have to choose between her cat and her dog since she was allowed only one pet. The cat and me though have been trying to work through the language barrier and we are really are making great strides. Since the cat has taken over my closet and my stuff just gets in his way I have been working on my new room. When I get the new room I am going to put a sign on the closet saying 'no cats allowed'. Nothing personal against the cat since I know he has some serious issues to work through just like I have but, hey, I was here first and I am the one who pays the rent around here and the utilities. And, yes, his special canned cat food because he doesn't like the dried food I bought for him in the bag. Which is okay with the dog because he can't read and eats the dried cat food, anyways. The dog I have noticed knows how I feel about the cat and just when the cat thinks everything is okay the dog will just growl at the cat and the cat will scamper under the car or van. Lady and me were doing just fine before the cat moved in but we are both trying to accept the cat because we both have been strays before ourself. Unfortunately, Crazy Cat is getting where Lady's growling at him doesn't affect him. He doesn't even purr when she growls. See, Crazy Cat used to be dragged around by his former dog friend. I think Crazy Cat is really crazy. But that is okay because he fits in quite nicely with all the other craziness here.

That also helps to explain why he is purring all the time. Stressed out from the move.

I was thinking it was because of stress because cats do purr when they are stressed, in pain, and happy. He didn't do well on the way done here, he litterally almost died, so I'm sure he is still recovering from all the trauma he went through and being in a new place.

Last time he got horny, he got "fixed". Though he does probably miss his female friends. I've thought about getting a female friend for him.

I had two female cats he's lived with before, one was olderm and the other was younger. The younger was just as playful as him, so they would hangout together and get into trouble with the dog, which would babysit them. 3he treated those cats like children, it was funny.

Of my 5 cats, one has traveling issues.
She would get so traumatized she would
nearly convulse.
So I went to the vet and guess what.
They have tranquilizers for cats.
I gave her one before a trip and she
sailed through it, mosly asleep.

That's why I suggested going to the vet before, because if a cat has issues with traveling, it's safer to give them a sedative so they can sleep through the trip.

He seems to be doing much better today. He's in the living room laying by the fireplace now. He seems to be content. He's not purring, just enjoying the sun it seems.

I think he'll be ok, just needs to get used to the place. I have high counter tops and yesterday he jumped up on them. I was surprised that he was able to, but he did it several times, so I don't think he is in any kind of physical pain, if so he has to have a pretty high pain tolerance.

I think he still has a few more years left in him. At least I hope so. I know I'm going to cry whenever he does go. He's been with me since I was 12.

But males don't go through heat. Maybe something similar? I don't know. He's not meowing to go out or at the windows or anything. In fact, he's only been on the window sills once, and he was just checking it out.

Totage, did you ever take him to the vet before your trip? Did you give him a sedative for the drive?

I should have, but didn't. I thought he would be oK, but I was wrong. I didn't have the money to take him to the vet. I still don't have the money, but it looks like I should be getting a job soon, so as soon as I can I'm going to get him checked out and everything.
