Wow...good for you! flowerforyou

In college I used to read books into a tape recorder for blind students and then I was a rape crisis counselor for about a year. But, nothing since my college days.

omg,, rape crisis must be so draining,, I had an 'advocate' with me when I went through my case and I remember being so impressed with how sweet and considerate she was even after seeing and hearing about so much negativity firsthand as her JOB

I have volunteered at my sons' schools and with their community sports teams. I ran a fundraiser to help raise money for a local boy that needed a liver transplant. Volunteering makes me feel good and it is a great way to meet good people. It is also important, as a parent, to let your children see you giving your time for others. My sons are 18 and 25 and have volunteered in various community projects. My older son ran Make a Wish for Divison II for the NCAA and has worked on Special Olympics. Service to help others is one small thing we can do to help change the world. JMO

I like the hands-on chit.
So I take my turkey fryer to the beach
at the end of the street and feed the
homeless dinners like Thanksgiving.

I am telling you, they are very grateful.
And more grateful are the working ones who
show up, hungry because their money ran out
before the month did.

I am a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity in my area...also heavily involved in our local campaign for The United Way.

Why? To upsetting? I would imagine it would be very hard.

I posted links to my causes. They also take donations. These are very important to me.

I volunteer for PAWS: Performing Animal Welfare Society. Kim Basinger started the ranch in Galt, CA which is only 35 miles from my house. They rescue wild animals from the circus, movie sets or from the homes of people that try to raise a wild animal in their backyard. I don't have access to the animals since I am not a zoologist, but I prepare food, mend fences, and clean up elephant poop!! They house lions, tigers, bears, monkeys, leopards, etc. The elephants are at the new habitat in San Andreas now but I had the chance to commune with two until the new facility opened up 2 years ago.

I also volunteer for Happy Tails no-kill pet rescue which is also local.

Best Friends in Utah - but that is only once a year. I reserve a bungalow and stay for a week doing whatever needs to be done.

I just started volunteering for the IAVA - Iraq Afghanistan Vets Assoc.

You'd be surprised that a little amount effort can go a long way.

Some people give me a hard time for not wanting kids or that lifestyle but I do contribute to society. flowerforyou

Volunteering is so fulfilling!!

I've worked with Habitat for Humanity, helped with fund-raising events for a few people in the area that are going through particularly tough times, served at a soup kitchen, was headed to the Hospital Albert Schweitzer in Haiti several years ago with physicians from my workplace, but political unrest halted those plans, Wanted to go there more recently with some of our trauma team, but my expertise is in a cardiac field, and those folks were most in need of trauma and medical/surgical skills. I hope to go one day. When I do, I may not want to come back...it would be wonderful work :-)

i didn't agree with them about putting a few dogs down, i thought there was hope for them... but i guess they didn't have the time to work with them more, and they wouldn't let me.

I helped my vet at her spay and neuter clinic for 5 years. My daughter even came and helped 2 years. We did post-op care.
