Topic: The World Cup? | |

WTF? Why is this so bloody important? Especially this year, 2010? I have never heard so much hype about a soccer tourney as I have this year, why is that? Do any of you really care? Before you answer, do you really? Do you know all of the players, and have you been following them to this point? Spare the national pride, if you haven't been following, then you are not a fan, you are a poser. And you have fallen victim to the international overblown hype over this laughable contest. I am just shocked at the amount of attention this event is getting, will somebody please explain.

I guess, judging by the hat you are wearing that you are from the US. Soccer (or football as we call it in Europe) is kinda the equivalent to either Basketball, Baseball, or American Football in the US. Kinda like the World Series with Baseball... It is massively overhyped but still one of the most watched events other than in the US I guess... Kinda one of theose isnt it

I'm not a soccer fan nor hockey fan. I do support the Vancouver Canucks and golf earlier than most fans following their teams!
There is a lot of money in soccer and many players in the sport make more money than any player in other professional sport. Their fans are passionate. The only time I watched soccer on TV was a few years back on the news where fans rioted in the stands and many were killed and injured in the process. Thank goodness for cable and satellite TV. Change the channel. |

Well it just happens to be the biggest football tournament in the world and is recognised as the best in the world, its played every 4 years so thats why its on this year.
Maybe it does get a lot of hype but its the greatest single sporting show on earth watched by every country in the world. |

i could care less about the US team and its hype but i do follow the italian league on a regular basis and, yes, world cup IS a big thing to me, to many torontonians, especially if you are of italian background.

To answer the OP..... the World Cup is soccer Olympics, the best players of the nation displaying the pride of their flag on their backs. Its a country becoming as one, rich and poor chanting their name.
USA - England?? I put my money on England even though I would like to see USA win..... its an easier team to beat later on. HAHAHA Celticsfc......Argentina is with you..... |

I personally don't follow soccer. But my boyfriend does. I have no problem watching the World Cup. Just like I have no problem watching the superbowl, despite not following football all season. But, I do not make a big deal about it. |

What a surprise, a bitter Scotsman!
You cant enjoy the World Cup because your own team were not good enough to make it, so you got to wish the worst on England even though we are all British. Shameful. England V USA in a few hours from now. England should win, but the USA have been known to cause upsets in the past, we'll have to play well to guarantee a win. Good luck to the USA. Im not getting involved in that BS football rivalry that causes people to become complete idiots. |

I predict a 3-0 win to England.

Im no bitter m8, but all u hear from the media is england this england, i have nothing against the english but u do have to admit the media do go overboard, and if u get beat they will turn on the team big time.
Its called good old banter m8 |

Football rivals...Brazil & Argentina. Liverpool & Man Utd. Rangers & Celtic. Hearts & Hibs. I could go on and on and on and on. my question is this. Why do so many people try and force Scots into backing our bitter rivals. The oldest rivalry in WORLD football is being watered down. Why?
