Topic: How many lightbulbs does it take to change a human? | |

Airheads are fun to argue with because they are impressionable.
The more knowledge you put into an Airhead the less air there is. It is truly amazing how much ignorance the human mind can actually contain. |

People chose what's important to them...they choose what information they want or feel they need. What one may feel is ignorance about another...another may feel is just something they have no need to acquire knowledge about or may feel they already know it all...
I'd rather deal with an airhead than a know it all. Ah, diversity, it's a beautiful thing! |

Consider Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz when she was telling Toto that she didn't think they were in Kansas any more. Then consider the song by Kansas called Carry On My Wayward Son. One could appreciate the diversity that the wayward son and Dorothy both found peace. |

Humans are too smart for our own good. It makes us more stupid then smart!
Example, the cost of an Incandescent light VS. Fluorescent. Cost of manufacture vs cost of maintenance (ie power to feed it) Incandescent lights cost far less to make and using down graded bulbs saves power. Also getting out of the habit of leaving a whole house lit up all the time helps greatly. Granted Fluorescent bulbs use less power BUT they use a lot more power to make them. So the savings are lost in the cost of manufacture. On top of that is the environmental problems. It takes more material to make and use a fluorescent light. Incandescent lights also do not use MERCURY to work! ALL FLUORESCENT LIGHTS HAVE MERCURY IN THEM! Now they are a eco hazard being shoved down our throats in the name of "Going Green." Humans are stupid! God why did I have to be one? |

The cost of a compact fluorescent is only about three bucks, which is paid back in about six months use. The light saves about $30 in energy over it's life, which is ten times longer than that of an incandescent. And if you must compare the cost of manufacture, you would have to compare ten incandescent bulbs to one CFL. A CFL only has about 5 milligrams of mercury. The energy it saves prevents the release of mercury into the atmosphere by power plants. |

Only one ... ... But it has to really, REALLY wanna change ...
Perception is due to perspective ... One person's ignorance? Another's BLISS!!! Airheads ... It's nt just pretty candy anymore ... |

The energy it saves prevents the release of mercury into the atmosphere by power plants. Of the available means of power generation which releases Mercury in any real detectable amount? More mercury is released in metal smelting than any other industry. How do you think Gold is purified? With mercury. Mercury is not a component of internal combustion fuels. You will not find Leaded fuel domestically but you can in Mexico. How about MTBE? That stuff corrodes Iron! It also does not combust yet it was supposed to "clean up our air." The stuff was a toxic nightmare and a carcinogen. Think you encountered that stuff in just the car exhaust? What about actually having to handle gasoline? All those Auto Mechanics? The savings from a Fluorescent light deplete when you add to the cost of ownership that it has to be treated as toxic waste. Tube fluorescent lights are the economical ones. The ones you screw into a light socket, THOSE are the ones that are not all that economical. Half the time you don't make expected service life on them. They have a high failure rate still. They are more cumbersome and will not fit in some fixtures. The ones that do are VERY expensive. If it has to be treated like toxic waste it is not cost effective! There are efficient incandescent lights out there and as LED technology gets better we may see a quantum leap in illumination soon. I am not swayed by all the Green movement. Some of it makes sense but some of it is just too far fetched and being called proven facet when there is no empirical evidence to back stuff like Global Warming. Increased Vulcanism explains a lot. So does Siberia thawing out. Now add that little oil disaster in the Gulf. How bad is it exactly. Try one Exxon Valdez washing ashore EVERY day! Alaska had it off easy with that one spill and how bad of a disaster was it supposed to be??? But back to fluorescent lights. Tube style make sense. The screw ins are a joke! There is always low voltage and LED lighting. People think too much inside of a box and think they are thinking outside of it. Yep, yep, yep, yep! |

There is always low voltage and LED lighting. People think too much inside of a box and think they are thinking outside of it. Yep, yep, yep, yep! Making up bs does not change the facts. Eastern Bituminous coal has about 3.5 parts per million mercury and is primarily used to make electricity in a coal fired power plant. They pump tons of mercury into the air. Since you are unaware of this fact, you should not be saying the opposite. Look it up. Pretty much everyone in industry, science, power generation, or has just spent a few minutes to study the problem, understands what a win win situation the CFLs are... except you. Go back and read the OP. Oh, and go check the amounts of mercury that quality as toxic waste and see where four or five milligrams fall. And one more thing, low voltage and led are the least cost effective forms of lighting. |

I never liked coal as a fuel anyways. Supposedly there are standards in place where the coal has to be processed to remove the mercury for as much as they can squeeze it for. Now you point the finger at our power companies. Try this on for size. Our power plants are supposed to abode by EPA regulations. How about China? How about Russia? How about Brasil? So try not to wave "facts" around like a penis in our faces. Omission is not nice. Who is the #1 consumer of Mercury? Last time I checked it was electronics (including lights). Fine, Coal is so super polluting? What about the ask left over? Phosphates, Potassium, Cadmium (which is even WORST THAN LEAD AND MERCURY COMBINED!).
Please do not get on a soap box and preach so loudly about coal if you were one of those people who argue Alcohol is a waste of time! We have alternatives in front of us but SOMEONE keeps blocking it all. Who MAYBE? Congressmen and senators yes but beyond them. Big business and Ignorant Tree Huggers. So let us digress to Lithium. Who makes all the Lithium cells and batteries in the world? China. The place they make them is rated in the top ten ecological disaster sites in the world. the area is so polluted NO vegetation grows there any more. "Oh but Lithium is so good for the environment!" Seriously. America is not exactly innocent but put the guilt where it belongs. What was that Chinese ship full of when it ran around in the great barrier Reef? This is where I would put a rim shot sound if that were possible. So I will just go out quietly this time... |

I was just pointing out that you were making false statements about CFLs, mercury in fuel, levels of mercury, cost of production of CFLs, effective cost of LED lighting and a few other items although I could have expanded the list. You are ignorant of the topic completely and respond with verbose crap to change the subject and try to showcase your "knowledge". You don't even know that the amount of co2 coming out of volcanoes is a drop in the bucket compared to what man puts into the atmosphere. You are the poster child for this thread. |
