Topic: Know this is really dumb | |

but I have to ask this. I have a really good friend of 30 years plus who has a hairdreser whom she loves and I think, eh. She talked me into going to her once, and I wasn't happy with what she did, besides the fact that she didn't do what I wanted. So this best friend of mine (and she really is) has started putting the pressure on me to 'do something with my hair' again and keeps bringing up going back to her. I really don't want to hurt her feelings, don't really want to do anything to my hair and told her this but she jokes around, I haven't the heart to stand up and tell her I don't like her stylist (have liked only a couple of cuts she's gotten). Does anyone have any suggestions on how to handle this?

I believe in being extremely blunt myself...I don't really know how to approach things nicely...for instance I would probably express that her stylist completely sucked...but thats just me

Just tell her you like your hair and don't want to do anything with it. Or, just tell her you don't like her stylist. I don't think there's a "one stylist fits all" thing when it comes to hair, especially with women.

If she is your best friend for 30 years then you should be able to say how you feel and she should respect your feelings. Tell her you are comfortable with the way you look and that although she likes the way her stylist does her hair you were not thrilled the last time you went there. If you don't tell her she is going to continue to bug you about it. Once you tell her how you feel I bet the topic would be dropped

go ahead do it, tell her the truth then she'll stop bring it up

yes, you guys are right. I even said something to the effect'...but it's the only thing I have left..'as a joke. I will tell her next time she brings it up. Mentioned that when i do cut it, it's gonna be so short, a 1/2 inch to a inch so won't have to deal with it at all. I'm not a blow dryer, curiling iron type of person, used to get perms back east but here it just dries the crap out of your hair. Also with long hair, can do so much more with it. The way she did it last time, not much could be done and it was always in my eyes. I think the ONLY thing have ver been a little vain about is my hair. Silly, eh?

You would think it was your hair you were talking about. By that I mean I thought it was my choice what I do with my hair. But to keep the peace I usually just get it cut. It started with my mother-in-law at one time. She kept telling me that I needed to cut my hair. That puzzled me because I never told her what she could do with her hair. It amazed me that my hair being long would affect her. I mean I grew up with two choices; A flat top or a crew cut. Actually my dad would determined which of the two at the barber's. For 18 years I would accept this because I really didn't have a say in it. But when I left home I thought, "Okay, its my hair now." I can remember what a liberating experience that was. Sure, there were the strange looks and the remarks that some people thought I was a female. Which really confused me since in the mirror I looked like a guy to me. It was always the social conditioning that one should like others expect you to look like everyone else. I guess it was the non-conformist in me or just my rebellious nature but I think a person's hair is just that. I know it must seem like a strange concept to some.

I was at my Brother's a couple of weeks ago and my 15 year old niece said *you need a haircut". So I said "OK, then cut it!". Her sisters were horrified that I would let her cut my hair since she had never done it before but my theory was, "whatever she does will grow back".
I am now her favorite uncle. I am also her only uncle. |

Just tell her what you posted here. There's no reason you HAVE to like the person she recommended. Besides, it's YOUR hair ... YOU get to decide who cuts it. As for the 'moral and ethical considerations' (such as they may be in this kinda thing), you've already discharged 'em 'cuz you tried the person she recommended - and you didn't like the job they did. No problem ...

Always in the east, had a gay stylist. Or a man. You're right, men do a better job because they want you to look good. I thought it was me that thought that, seemed like women didn't want you to look good. I would if were stylist but have run into alot like that. Here, have not found a decent stylist in 14 years. Transient, they don't care. so usually do it myself. Yes will tell her if she approaches the subject again. Thanks all for the nudges, just needed a little support. I id tell her I like my hair like the way it was on Saturday, she said one more thing and dropped it. We'll see. |
