Y'all is a contraction of You and All. It is most commonly used as a way to differentiate between the you(singular) and you(plural) pronouns.
This contraction clears up ambiguity in sentences, especially in imperative sentences. For example, If I say to the class: "I want you to finish this worksheet." Some of my students are bound to decide that I must have been talking to someone else. If I say "Y'all finish your worksheets" The same student now has a harder time squirming out of his work, because I have made it obvious that I am talking to the group, rather then to an individual. |

Is it a word? and where did it Originate? No, probably somewhere where they use half-*** english every day...I guess it is something like 'you all'...which is usually used in the wrong form anyway... |

Come and listen to a story about a man named Jed
A poor mountaineer, barely kept his family fed, Then one day he was shootin at some food, And up through the ground came a bubblin' crude. Oil that is, black gold, Texas tea. Well the first thing you know ol' Jed's a millionaire, Kinfolk said Jed move away from there Said Californy is the place you ought to be So they loaded up the truck and moved to Beverly. Hills, that is. Swimmin pools, movie stars. The Beverly Hillbillies! Sung at the end of the show: Well now its time to say good-bye to Jed and all his kin. And they would like to thank you folks fer kindly droppin in. You're all invited back again to this locality To have a heapin helpin of their hospitality Hillbilly that is. Set a spell. Take your shoes off. Y'all come back now, y'hear? |

Hummmm I ain't no Hillbilly and I use the word ya'll all the time (sorry Keith that is just the way I spell it )
Here in Texas you will hear it said many times a day believe me. The word ya'll is part of our vocabulary there is no telling how often I say it or type it...... Really don't see a big deal about it there are many states that have words to me that are different. When I was younger and went to Calif. for a little while it was kinda of funny as soon as I said ya'll it seemed the first words out of their mouths were your from Texas huhh? |
