Snapping turtles would make a very interesting pet for those who neither have the means, the permission, nor the guts to have an alligator for a pet.
I came across one of these snappers on a golf course once. As I tried to circle around to get his tail, he would slowly turn and face off with me, sumo-style, while making a hissing sound. It would be cool to toss it a fish, watching as it made grotesque bobbing movements with its' head as it ate the fish. The only thing would be the legalities involved in keeping a wild animal captive. I've caught several of them, fascinated by the fact they seem to be a cross between a turtle and a mean, ole gator! |

Had a turtle as a pet once, they are kind of boring pets. They do not do that much. Never tried them for dinner though.

i have just learned how to trap snapping turtles, i kinda enjoy it, but could do without the cleaning process. I have several properties that i manage that have fish ponds on them and i need to control the turtle population. Usually i release them somewhere else. Hve you tried turtle and/ or are you more of a turtle pet type? I'm the turtle pet type. lol |

Snap[ping turtles make excellent soup...as ingredients not cooks! Make sure you remove all of the fat when you clean them...not hard because the fat is separated from the fleshy meat by a skin. And be careful with the head...even after being completely decapitated, a snapping turtle head can take a finger off! You need to know what you're doing! Be careful...and enjoy. Some very good places in New Orleans serve this delicacy! MMMmmm. They make lousy pets by the way...unless of course you want to be called "Lefty" some day!

... thanks for all the interesting posts. i thought there would be a lot more pet types than dinner types in this crowd. I dont like killing em and dicing em up part, though i was shown an easy button method that takes about 15 minutes. ... which is why i usually release them in another place. have read that they will travel up to 10 miles, so I take them for a nice country drive. Thet are actually quite docile when in the water.... it is when they are on land that they get an attitude. ( it dont help when we all poke at them with sticks. lol)
My grandpa used to trap them and then keep them in a washtub for a week, changing the water each day. The man who taught me "turtleology" doesent do this. The biggest one i have trapped so far was a 15 pounder, not really very big, they get to be much bigger than that. A friend of mine trapped 2- 35 pounders. Not sure about the legality in michigan about keeping them as pets or moving them to another pond for that matter. Thanks again for sharing your stories, they are all very interesting. Bill |
