Someone has joined my website using the presidents name as their username. They haven't mad any posts or anything. Is there anything I should do? I mean have they broken any law or anything?

I didn't think there is anything against doing something like that, but I want to make sure.

Not a lawyer but if they are useing the President's name as a monicer and in fact, not impersonateing the President which would be a crime, he is only parodying a public figure which has very little risk of even slander.

I am not sure it is would be wise to encourage this since it is quite likely to result in a firestorm of opposeing responses that might or might not bring you positive attention.

How do you know for certain it is not the President?

The President is using terrorists names...maybe HE is breaking the law

From what I've read it seems that the law is still unclear about such situations. However, the one who created the account may be able to be sued. It appears that the webmaster would have immunity is such cases, because it would be third party content, or something like that.

So, I think I would be ok.


Anway, it turns out that it was a spambot, which means if the president wanted to, he could sue whoever it is who made the account, because his name is being used for commercial purposes. Atleast that's how I understand what I've been reading.

sucks when you have a real legit question and everyone treats you like you're wasting their time they don't give a sh*&** because they don't know the answer right?

i'd monitor him and let it go for now but you can check with your local government for that.

The same name, IP, and e-mail is on several balcklists for spamming, so I just banned the account. However, If the account was real, I would agree to let it go. Like I said, from what I've read it looks like I would be safe.

good grief. owning a website is just like owning a business of any other kind. you have to watch yourself very carefully regarding infringement laws and such.

Thanks, the site is still new, so I'm still trying to get real and active members. So far it appears that the only members I have are spambots. LOL
