Topic: Are Pagans still considered devil worshipers?

Well, I guess this was kind of a failed experiment. Now that I think about it though, if I thought that Pagans were devil worshipers, I probably wouldn't admit it for fear of being "jumped on" by other pagans. That wasn't my intention at all, I really just wanted to get a feel for the perception of paganism out there.

Oh well, if it inspired Smiless to start that other thread, it was worth it. happy

I think the main problem with religion or other spiritual practices is that the human naturally is skeptical and even at some point negative if they don't understand a concept or history of the practice.

With that being said, I can imagine how much influence that this brings on communities, the reason why such terrible events have happened in the past.

I do believe that more people are starting to understand that there are different practices of spiritualism and religion to lead to a better tolerance level and understanding without the resort to violence.

Is it perfect, well no, it is not yet, and for that matter maybe never will be, but in the long run we have gradually improved on understanding the various belief systems. I would say many countries have. Some more then others, but many still have prejudices and misunderstandings as a whole.

It is in our deepest desires to try to improve this somehow and it starts with one person and it adds to many later on. I hope for the sake of mankind we will solve our differences to where we can live in peace amongst each other for once.

I am a vegetarian humanitarian.

I have lived half of my life in developing countries feeding and aiding those who are less fortunate.

I assume your question is for joke purposes. drinker

Whether Pagans and Wiccans are considered to be devil worshippers depends on who you ask. My (Baptist) parents think that Paganism/Wicca are absolutely satanic, but they are also very narrow-minded about it. I also have known people who are part of the Baptist Church who realize that Pagan/Wiccan beliefs are not satanic or devil-worship. I think it depends on the individuals' opinions, life experiences, and up-bringing, and on their clergy-men in their local church. But we are more accepted and main-stream, over-all, than we were in the past.
BTW, I'm not intending to dis Baptists. I only used that as an example because Mom and Dad are very much against Wicca, and they, coincidentally, happen to be Baptist.

I think, generally speaking, that that is true. Most Christians believe (and I think Muslims do, too) that if you are not worshiping the "One True God" then you are worshiping Satan. However, over the last year or so I have heard some Christians and even Catholic clergy saying that they, personally, do not believe this. They are much more accepting of other belief systems and less certain about hell.

Hi Ms Ruth,flowerforyou

long time-no chatohwell .

I'm a follower of Christ, as you may remember, but I only relate his teachings to myself and myself alone. Some may find contradiction in that because of "hell-fire and brimstone" paridigms of some self annoited gospel preachings that claim to know the mind of God.

I do NOT know God's mind. I only know what my heart percieves to be real as it pertains to my own life and ultimate destiny.

I fully admit that for all I know, I'm caught up in a myth, BUT!, then again since I trust my heart more than my mind (sue me), I find it wholly and completely reasonable and correct to percieve Christ's teachings as supernatural(FOR ME).

As long as any given individual or group is capable and willing to show compassion as well as restraint, they have my respect and my willingness to work along side of them to make this world a better place.

I certainly have never believed for even a second that someone else is eternally doomed unless they subscribe to my faith.

Again, some may think that wishy washy at best, or even heritic at worst, but simply put, Jesus was the gentle teacher. He didn't go around damning folks...He merely tried to light the way for those who choose to follow in his path.flowerforyou

Hi Allen! flowerforyou

It has been a long time! happy

I understand your personal beliefs. I was wondering about your perception of what pagans believe. When you hear the word "pagan" do you thing of "devil worshiper" or some other negative connotation? This thread is more of a survey to see if people still have, in general, a negative picture of pagansim in their minds.

Well, I like to think that I should judge the action and not the person (or people). I don't know much about paganism and I know even less about devil worshipers. I'm glad that I live in a land where I'm free to pursue my own beliefs and I cringe everytime I hear of someone else being put down for theirs.
My perception is that no matter what you (or I) believe in concerning the spitual realm, only time will tell and in the meantime we should focus on what makes us similar instead of on what makes us different.
If one's belief system causes them to feel it's okay to adopt selfish attitudes, then it's negative, but if it encourages them to have compassion and mercy,of course, it's positive.

Why would catholics be considered devil worshipers?

Oh you mean the other religions with multiple gods.

Hey! I happen to be Catholic sometimes!

I was baptised and brought up catholic, and as they say I have the guilt to prove it. Well not anymore but for several years anyway. lol

Yeah, that Catholic guilt can be hard to get rid of. I was raised non-Catholic Christian. My father was a Presbyterian minister when I was growing up. I converted to Catholicism after marrying my husband who was Catholic. I studied everything I could get my hands on about Catholicism. I began studying the history of the Catholic which is what eventually led me to Paganism. I still love the beauty of the ritual in Catholicism and take my children to Mass sometimes. Hence, my still being "Catholic sometimes".

I can't really remember what I was taught specifically as a child about pagans, but you did get the distinct impression they were not godly. Oh hell I am going to butcher this. I think I personally got the idea that anything that wasn't taught in Sunday school was bad. Hell I thought being catholic was the only Christianity and everyone bowed to the Pope. I thought that was really strange.

laugh No, you didn't butcher it and I appreciate the anwer to the question.

Yes, as a Christian I was also taught that anyone who wasn't worshiping Jesus/God was, in essence, worshiping Satan. I practiced Traditional Catholicism for a while after converting and they were even more adamant about it being the One True Faith. They believe that even Protestants and modern Catholics were going to hell. Pagans and anyone involved in anything deemed "occult" by Christianity were the worst of all. I wonder why their view of Pagans was so much worse than their view of Jews or Muslims.

Because of the ritual, when I later tried other things I had this idea that the ritual was nessessary to be legitimate. Later still I grew tired of the stress on my self trying to figure out if I fit in any of it, the ritual became a burden. Now I cringe at any sort of ritual, not absolutely sure why. That might make sense only to me of course.. LOL
