What are your thoughts on being a good houseguest? Have you ever had any bad ones at your house or brought one/some to a relative's home?

No, I rent them a hotel room to save the misery.

A good houseguest is someone who comes for a visit, knows when they are leaving and doesn't disrupt the flow of the house.

I believe Ben Franklin said it best.
Paraphrased, Guests are like fish, no matter how well you treat them After 3 days, they start to stink. |

i have never really had a bad houseguest, as in "someone who spent the night".......bc usually those who come over that are potential bad house guests dont even make it past 5pm...........

Hi Billy....
And Fran... nice and succinct as always. ![]() Let's try it this way.... If you went to go stay at someone's house, what are certain things you'd do to ensure you were a good guest? |

Hey sunshine - how are you and your lil man doing? This situation I try to avoid, but an overnight stay is great so long as the departure is bright and early leaving all things in tact and clean. *a good houseguest is also someone who has been invited to stay not one that invites themselves ![]() |

i had a bad houseguest once.
it was a last-minute decision so no planning had been thought out on my part. however, i still think the person staying overnight should have been appreciative and gracious. she complained about having to sleep in a single bed with her son (her daughter was bunking with my 3 girls). i suppose i could have offered up my double bed and taken the single, but it was enough that i'd provided her children with pajamas and washed their clothes for the next day (at her asking). if i recall correctly, i think i DID end up giving up my bedroom, when she asked if i had a fan as she liked to fall asleep to the noise. the master bedroom has an overhead fan. ~~~ personally, i'd prefer to rent a hotel if i were visiting people. mostly what i'd expect from someone else is what i'd give in return: heartfelt appreciativeness and a big thank you. if someone gets invited to my house, i don't actually expect anything in return excpt maybe an offer to reciprocate. |

What about a several day stay?

Manners & if they don't have them, I show them the door & tell them WHY.

What about a several day stay? i'd feel as if i were imposing on someone if i stayed that long. however, it wouldn't bother me if i had a guest for several days - provided there was a firm departure date (i've seen guests my parents have had stay MUCH longer than originally intended). i'd offer to buy a load of groceries, or at least compensate for the cost of food, as well as treat them to a night out at a restaurant. if they refused, at the risk of insulting them and leaving money somewhere, i'd most likely send a basket of something, or a gift card in a thank you note after i'd left. |

I've had people spend their vacations at my home with the clear understanding that they were the one's on vacation not me. Usually works out fine except when they don't find anything to do and want me to come along (great on weekends but not during the week for me).
Now, when I go on vacation I either go visit family or some place new. In case of family, I jump around a lot - one night here, one night there - avoiding the 3 day fish smell. |

I just spent 6 days as a guest in jacksonville. The host drove everywhere we went.Made dinner two days and arranged all the plans.I did my own laundry, and helped landscape the house,I sprung for two nights in beach front hotel and a 4hr boat ride.We went dutch to a water park, and a concert in St Augastine. With no problems.I think it depends on guest/host personality

So are good manners considered "standards" ??

wiyhout a doubt if you ever want invited back ![]() I totally agree. And what would you all do if you brought someone to visit your family that was unaware of these standards, and you didn't know they had no manners? |
