A senior police officer has said he fears the spread of CCTV cameras is
leading to "an Orwellian situation".

Deputy chief constable of Hampshire Ian Readhead said Britain could
become a surveillance society with cameras on every street corner.

He told the BBC's Politics Show that CCTV was being used in small towns
and villages where crime rates were low.

Mr Readhead also called for the retention of some DNA evidence and the
use of speed cameras to be reviewed.

His force area includes the small town of Stockbridge, where parish
councillors have spent £10,000 installing CCTV.

Mr Readhead questioned whether the relatively low crime levels justified
the expense and intrusion.

'Every street corner?'

"I'm really concerned about what happens to the product of these
cameras, and what comes next?" he said.

"If it's in our villages, are we really moving towards an Orwellian
situation where cameras are at every street corner?

"And I really don't think that's the kind of country that I want to live
in."

There are up to 4.2 million CCTV cameras in Britain - about one for
every 14 people.

The UK also has the world's biggest DNA database, with 3.6 million DNA
samples on file.

you know DC has a lot of little cameras all over the place too,
coincidents i think they also have the tightest gun control laws. and
the highest or among the highest crime rates in our land.

Handguns are illegal in the UK.

Plus, I would rather shove a red hot poker up my butt than buy or use a

internship, etc) or were you trained by the military as a medic.

Im struggling with this concept of "Doing no harm" from the hippocratic
oath and you as a medical person, who is ascribing to the edict of "buy

I was checking the treehouse to see if you were there.

alex is the doctor without borders, i am the combat medic, never have
any of you seen me claim to be anything other than a soldier.

mine was a statement of sarcasm, i know that handguns are illegal in the
UK, but what does it say when a nation has outlawed handguns still has
such a high crime rate.

obviously there needs to be some other kind of reform.


people relax and breath, im not talking about walking around doing

as for me, i will continue on with my duties as a medic until i get my
acceptance into my PA program.

it might be rated the number one video on the net if some hacker were to

I for one don't wonder why you are paranoid. Paranoia stands tall when
courage leaves the room.... Correct me if I am wrong: Britains can own
sporting arms? It's not the weapon, it's the moron behind it. You can't
legislate stupidity. You can't reduce the fear of the paranois. Their
paranoia is from within. Doc, I saw the humor in your post. People tend
to take you too seriously. Perhaps it would be better if you typed "that
was meant to be funny, you friggin yahoo" after each comment of humerous
intent? Just a thought. Belushi, on a lighter note, I spent a lot of
time in England. The people were very friendly and welcoming. I really
had a great time and hope to be back there again for a visit.
