I wake up with that every morning. I learned a long time ago that it really doesn't take much to be happy. Just enough money to cover my humble needs and the time to enjoy life. What more could anyone want?

What more could anyone want? I agree, but I don't think I've learned it as well as you have...yet, but I'm still working on it. Also, I would like to thank all of you for your comments. This is my first thread to get past the first page. |

What the hell does money have to do with anything?
Inner peace, contentment, or 'happiness'....doesn't come from material possessions...or income, no matter how humble. Some of the poorest people on this planet, are some of the wealthiest people I know, in spirit, and the most joyous. DO they have everything they need or want? Nope. Funny how the so called money, asset 'wealthiest' countries in the world have the highest depression rates... |

I don't think a want of money was the point, He said just enough to cover his humble "needs" not his humble "wants" there is a big difference, but yes I do agree with you also that money is not a deciding factor in a person's happiness. Although for those who don't know how to, or are not in a position to live of the land it's can be a deciding factor in whether or not they will have food in their stomachs. That would be a "need." |

We have ads telling us our lives are not compleat because we have stains on our clothes or our drinking glasses don't sparkle enough. IMHO that is the cause of much of our depression. We must have enough money to buy the things we need to live. Food, shelter, clothing etc. But, we only NEED so much money and anything more is just for showing off. I make less than $300 a week and most people think I live like a rock star because I know how, when and where to spend it to the best advantage. |

Scoundrel....my post was not a direct hit at you....nor your post....otherwise I would have used the quote button, so you knew I was talking with you directly. it just sh*ts me to tears that there is this mentality that having every single need met somehow equates happiness. You create your own, through an internal decision....I know that, I've learnt it through your posts. I too am low income, and yet live like a king. I have everything I need...and more than what I want. And if I had none of it? I would still be wealthier in spirit, and my contentment would not be ruffled. |

Hmmmm... I don't think I could be happy if I was starving for food, had no place to live or had no winter coat.

If you woke up one day and found that you suddenly had everything that you could possiably need what would be the first thing you would do? I'm glad to see that some of you are actually getting into the nitty gritty of this topic. That is why I used the word "NEED" in my original post(not "want") and did not mention the the word "happiness" I was interested how people might interpret the question. There are some really good comments from you all and I'm interested where this might go still yet |

I have....been cold , wet, and hungry...homeless....was I unhappy?
No I was uncomfortable...I was still content within myself....just very uncomfortable. My son spent six months in Timor in the hills, and saw some of the poorest villages we could ever imagine....they had basic shelter...for summer...no running fresh water, sometimes very little food, and barely clad...the kids were joyful, the elderly relaxed and smiling. He came home, touched down in Sydney....and was gobsmacked by the misery, suspicion, and shallowness of the general 'wealthy nation' masses. What the heck is happiness? Is it somehow wrapped up in some mythological fantasy...that one must aspire to? |

I'd quit my job & fly out to Iowa, unless, of course, she was next to me when I woke up...........

This is just my opinion, but you speak of people in poverty being content and happy, and people with wealth and power not being happy. I think maybe the key to this might be that those in poverty knew exactly what their needs were and those with wealth have their needs confused with their wants. I have also lived very poor and know what it is like to go without a few meals. You begin to learn that even food can become a want when it exceeds what you need to stay alive and healthly. I guess my point is that there is a fine line between needs and wants, and quite possiably the abilty to know happiness might lay in part within this region.

I think I see what Jess means. I'll share this much. I try to keep a cap for the most part on this part of my life but....
After my husband died, just within a couple of weeks, I remember walking through our new house, big house, new furniture etc. I walked from room to room. Into the dining room that I FINALLY had and had wanted for many years to be able to have friends over with more room. Looked into my china cabinet...walked in all the rooms and just thought...it's over. None of this matters, means anything without him. Nothing money could have bought, nothing money Had bought healed my heart in that moment. I have always been a basic person with regard to material things. But in that moment, I knew, for sure what was the most important thing in life. |
