I remember starting to chat online when AoL was still $/Hour site. I soon got addicted to talking to people around Portland ,whom I had never met before, like they were old friends after just a week. I also remember not telling anyone else in my group of friends that I was doing that because I thought at the time they wouldnt understand.
Todays world is much different, everyone is so plugged into the internet phenomenon that the once dreaded Stigma no longer applies. People getting married because they met on the internet is a everyday occurance. I got married to a woman that I met through a Portland area chat room on AoL and were together for 12 years. I would say that the bond that people create online starts in the heart/head...and not in the pants/hormones. Although mine wasnt a success (as far as longevity), I would think that others who meet online would have a higher rate of success than people who met at a club/bar/event/etc. So to everyone who thinks this stigma is outdated..... TM I think there is still a stigma attached, but perhaps it's just from those who don't participate (and there are still many people I know who are not 'plugged in' this way.) It's nice to hear your story, but you know...12 years was the length of my marriage after meeting through more 'conventional' means, so who's to say that wasn't pretty normal in terms of longevity regardless of how you met? |
