I wonder why the World Navies dont escort the ships in convoy around the horn.

Something like they did during WWII!

Its probably a cost/reward issue. Im sure it would be quite a bit cheaper for the shipping companies to have a few hired guns on board.

I read they don't arm the crews in fear of mutiny. It like stepping back into the 18th century.

It's all over various sites, but a lot of them are suspiciously the same story retold. I did read one that went as far back as a year ago, so I don't think it's new news.

You did the hair cut already.shocked It looks great.bigsmile

Well thanks!

This is kind of interesting. Who knows what's true eh?

That says hazardous waste. Oil and rubbish! not nuclear!

That one did, I just found the article interesting. There's plenty of others using the term nuclear waste, but as I said, many are repeats of the same story.

"...by the Somali Transitional Federal Parliament (TFP). It is also unlikely it will achieve its stated objectives to curb the shipping piracy as it is now conceived. The TFP and the members of the European Parliament rejected these UN and European decisions to police the Somali seas (both the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden) as both illegal and unworkable. At a Press Conference in Nairobi on October 18th 2008, the Deputy Speaker of the TFP, Mohamed Omar Dalha, termed the deployment of foreign warships to the country's coast to fight piracy as invasion of its sovereignty and asked the foreign warships to “move out of the Somali waters”."

Europeans, The Italians, French, and Swedes were dumping the waste.
They paid the then President Ali Mahdi Mohamed to accept the waste.

I still dont really see a link to the piracy though.

"Following the massive tsunami of December 2004, there have also emerged allegations that after the outbreak of the Somali Civil War in the late 1980s, Somalia's long, remote shoreline was used as a dump site for the disposal of toxic waste. The huge waves which battered northern Somalia after the tsunami are believed to have stirred up tonnes of nuclear and toxic waste that was illegally dumped in the country by several European firms."

I read that the companies who own the ships are worried that the pirates will be more deadly if the crews are armed. Some fear setting off explosive reactions on board the ships.

The worlds Navies already have like 2 doz ships in the area but they are scattered and generally arrive to late to be of help!

I think they should convoy!

$8 a tonne. They paid the President of Somalia!
It normally cost the Europeans $1000 a tonne to dump it!

The UN gave the green light for Navies to chase the pirates into Somalian waters and blow them out of the water if need be.

The French actually followed some after they gained land and attempted to escape into the desert via jeep. They shot them up with a helicopter killing and capturing them all!

GO France!drinker

I see new hostilities emerge from this. The "pirates" will be more vicious, just watch. Terrorism, sending boats with bombs on it and so on...

In answer to the OP, I don't understand what hand was shown. Second, piracy comes in different forms but this one is becoming very problematic.

I would think all sea bearing countries would be in on this type of protection. It should be a collaboration of countries to help with this.
