President Barack Obama vowed Monday "to halt the rise of piracy,"

and how is he going to do that??? pirates have been around for a very long time and haven't been halted yet

That was very carefully worded statement. Notice it does not say he will "stop" piracy just going to halt the rise. I don't think he can do that either but it's easy to play games with the numbers to make an appearance of success.

they have been around for a VERY long time and no one has halted the rise yet. not to mention...the laws of the countries that might be protecting them

Piracy in Somalia began (as I understand it) as an attempt to thwart the dumping of nuclear waste in their waters. It grew from there. I doubt there are any laws protecting them. They are not stopped by the local governments because they bring money and economic gains to the region. It's unlikely they will want us to come teaching them how to train militia to end all this. However, you can't just pick people off boats willy nilly to capture for ransom without some sort of paybacks. They got one in the form of Navy Seals from us. Hopefully it serves as a wake up call.

I hadn't heard of anything like that, but I know nuclear waste is extremely valuable on the black market. I don't know who would be dumping it in Somalia though

The british press blames the French for dumping nuclear waste. I dont know if they have any proof, but the idea of fishing in an area contaminated by nuclear waste is just absurd.

Maybe he will be sending our tax dollars to keep the pirates hijacking other countries ships.

Not sure if you're trying to be funny here or not, but I can guarantee that would not be the case. Nuclear waste is the quickest way to a dirty bomb which most any country on the planet is capable of making once they have the material

UMMM, the US Navy, for one. They've admitted dumping it into a big crack in the Atlantic Shelf

Depending on how the waste was handled on dumping it probably would not effect the water for at least 25 to 50 years. After that all hell would break loose.

Well I haven't anyone offer proof of that but if they are then they better get in there and protect it.

Better do both, dumping nuclear waste in an unsecured area is global suicide

After further investigation, it appears that the waste was dumped in barrels during the early 1990s, and were ripped opened by the Tsunami a few years ago. No one knows exactly what was contained in the barrels or who exactly dumped them, but there are several radiation poisoning cases since then.

What?

Do you have a link to that version of the story?
I have yet to see that one!

Yeah I did some checking also. There have been accusation that european country's have been dumping and pirates have been using that as an excuse but there's no proof that anyone has done any dumping other than the stuff you just posted about.

It's all over various sites, but a lot of them are suspiciously the same story retold. I did read one that went as far back as a year ago, so I don't think it's new news.

It is no secret that the U.S. military has used the ocean as trashcan for munitions in the past. Peter discussed at the Old DSN how federal lawmakers were pressing the US Army to reveal everything it knows about a massive international program to dump chemical weapons off homeland and foreign shores. "The Army now admits that it secretly dumped 64 million pounds of nerve and mustard agents into the sea, along with 400,000 chemical-filled bombs, land mines and rockets and more than 500 tons of radioactive waste - either tossed overboard or packed into the holds of scuttled vessels.

Yes munitions, I got my problems with that too but we are talking about nuclear waste.

Excuse me I missed the last part of that. I will have to check the source.
