asks you for some spare change, do you acknowledge them or keep walking? Don't say yes if in reality you wouldn't just to look pristine in front of friends. Heck, if I was in a hurry they're just outta luck.

I like to talk to them, don't usually spare them much money but don't mind getting them some food.

I generally acknowledge them. Most of the time I say 'No honey I don't have any money on me'

I'll give em food not money.

I generally will acknowledge and just say 'no, i'm sorry'. I've tried to giving food route and had it thrown back at me!

There's a bum in my town who holds a sign that says: ' Why lie, i need beer and cigs'
honesty goes a long way, he gets lots of handouts! |

Food, cigarettes, a blanket, the number of the nearest place of shelter, and the money to ring it....and my time.
I have been homeless, and have begged. Not all people who find themselves destitute are drug addicts, alcoholics, nor mentally impaired, all though many are. |

It was the same guy on a street corner in Cleveland when I spent a few weeks there. I took him some breakfast one morning, knowing I'd see him on my walk to the office and he just chunked it back at me with a few choice words.
