Topic: Imported Beef, McDonalds, etc. | |

I work, part-time for a cattle rancher. It's been dryer than than an English joke out here. Ranchers are paying top dollar for hay, when they can find it. Large bale goes for $175.00 and will last 20 cows about 4 days. He has a little over 300 head.
Almost doesn't pay him to have them. Auction prices are low because of lack of feed and the lower price paid for imported Beef. Some of the countries we import Beef from are regulated and are free from banned pesticides. South America is not regulated and can use DDT and other pesticides that are ingested by the cattle, passing it on to the consumer. McDonalds is buying Beef from South America and feeding it to you. For economic and health reasons, US Cattle Ranchers are asking the public to Boycott McDonalds until they quit using South American Beef. |

Why don't we make the u.s. ranchers unregulated instead, so that they can compete with foreigners.
They can compete by using same chemicals that foreign farmers use. This situation is not normal. Local production will always outbid the remote production, because of the cost of transport (everything else being equal). As to the beef that was produced without government oversight, we can leave a choice of using it or not to a consumer. If it is true, that for instance, a DDT-free beef is better, than it means, that a DDT-Free beef should be able to be sold for more. Right? If such a beef is easier to sell for a higher price, then there is the competitive advantage right away, - in producing a good and healthy beef. May-be the fact that a foreign, contaminated beef sells as good as local, uncontaminated beef, even competing with it in price, means that the public really doesn't care all that much about the contamination? |

Maybe, you could consider bringing it out and charge just a little less. If you do consider it, put an ad in the Fort Stockton Pioneer newspaper that you are planning a trip and would appreciate being called by interested parties. |

Forgive my skepticism, but your statement isn't entirely true. I know, for instance, that McDonalds grows it's own cattle in Hawaii. I've seen their ranch on the Big Island.
