I was spoken to because I referred to some clients as drug addicts. I did not know that the politically correct term is people suffering from a substance abuse disorder. I didn't know the correct term. What do you think about this. Should I have been reprimanded?

Since when is an addiction a disorder? One you do to yourself. The other happens to you. It is in the DSM-Diagnostic Statistical Manual-the book they use to diganose. |

It does carry some stigma, and some clients might be offended.
Is there another term that is more acceptable in the office? Were you written up, or just a verbal reminder? |

substance abusers might be a more polictical correct term... it all depends on context. I am sure that I will be getting an email from you.

the world has become sooo pc... we can no longer point out the obvious. they are drug addicts! i'm fat.. not weight challenged or pleasently plump. LOL freakin people call it like it is and accept that as a fact of life. you should NOT have been reprimanded and being you had no idea.. this should have been dropped. |

substance abuse disorder is the correct term. Some clients can take offense to being called an addict. I don't think you should have been reprimanded for it. Your supervisor should have talked to you about it and explained why substance abuse disorder is prefered rather than drug addict.

I didn't know the correct term. What do you think about this. Should I have been reprimanded? Reprimanded. If it is understood beforehand what the correct term and or procedure to use. Usually it is understood via company policies that are signed by the employee. If procedures/terms to use are not understood by the employee, then the employer (your boss), should be the one that is reprimanded. Roco |
