You hear how they talk about bailouts and stuff, so they are saying big numbers, but it's hard to imagine without examples, just how much is a billion or a trillion.
here are some examples: A million seconds is 12 days. A million hours ago was in 1885. . . . A million dollars ago was five (5) seconds ago at the U.S. Treasury. --------------------------------------------- A billion seconds is 31 years. A billion minutes ago was just after the time of Christ. A billion hours ago man had not yet walked on earth. . . A billion dollars ago was late yesterday afternoon at the U.S. Treasury. ---------------------------------------------- Trillion = 1,000,000,000,000. if you were to count to the number 1 trillion, counting every second, night and day, it would take you 31,688 years The country has not existed for a trillion seconds. Western civilization has not been around a trillion seconds. One trillion seconds ago – 31,688 years – Neanderthals stalked the plains of Europe. A trillion dollars is so large a number that only politicians can use the term in conversation... probably because they seldom think about what they are really saying. |

1 trillion hours ago was 114,077,116 years ago , that's 114 Million years ago(give another 77 thousand years), that's the Cretaceous period after the Jurassic period, dinosaurs still roamed the Earth and the first mammals and birds started to appear.

During a daily war report to the president, Condoleeza Rice began..."Mr. President....today three Brazillian soldiers were killed by I.U.D's...."
"OH MY GOD!" screamed Bush. "OH NO!" The staff sat in stunned silence as George sobbed uncontrollably... finally he looked up and asked..."Exacty how many is a brazzillion?" |

Large numbers are hard to visualize. I remember going to a monument in Paris, France, erected in memory of all of the Jews sent to the death camps, 300000 of them. There's a long hallway in the monument and for each person sent away there's a marble embedded in the wall. Really puts the number in respective.

I can get my head around a Trillion. Once they shifted from talking about millions to billions, knew it was around the corner.
And having an interest in archeology, I understand what that number means. I think it was only a bit over 20 years ago that the government started discussing billions instead of millions. But I have to admit that in the 70's, that wouldn't have been on my radar. I just know that I've always thought that it was just another piece of evidence that prices for everything were going up way to fast. For hundreds of years, prices went up slowly. Then, at some point in the Twentieth century, it started to go up far more rapidly. Prices that had been jumping only by a few percentage points jumped several hundred percentage points in the last half century. It's all a symptom of capitolism and consumerism trying to see how far they can push prices up and still get people to pay. All so the people at the top of the company can make the most money out of the rest of us. My view is that there is a limited supply of money. I have no problem with Free Trade. My problem is uncontrolled Capitolism telling everyone that if you just work hard enough you will be able to get a bigger share of the money out there, as if it comes out of a never ending pool. But the reality is that people who want to make those millions and billions of dollars are really taking up the largest share of the monetary flow and leaving the rest of us to try and scrap by with less and less. I so not suggesting communism. Nor even complete Socialism. But I do think something has to be done to address this and put more controls on businesses. The government had wanted to majority of the population to spend more money to stabilize the economy. But it will never help when the majority of the US income is sitting in bank accounts and tied up in depreciating property and stocks belonging to less than 25% of the U.S. population that doesn't want their precious lifestyle reduced. |
