Topic: NEWLY UNITITED AMERICA?

Bush Senior won a bigger majority on the coatails of Reagan. The country isn't any more united now than it was 2, 4, or 8 years ago.

The country still has roughly equal numbers of conservatives and liberals, along with a bunch of centrists, and even a bunch of people without political awareness/interest.

Right now there is a great deal of hope for improvements, and there might even be a few.

However, Obama has radical leftist tendencies, and those will result in a harmful shift towards the left by the US government. Overall this presidency is going to be worse than it would have been with a better choice. Then again, John "the centrist" McCain wasn't much better than Obama, and now that Obama has endorsed the Bush policy in Iraq, there isn't much difference between the two candidates.

This is part of what Obama said today:

"The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works -- whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified. Where the answer is yes, we intend to move forward. Where the answer is no, programs will end. And those of us who manage the public's dollars will be held to account -- to spend wisely, reform bad habits, and do our business in the light of day -- because only then can we restore the vital trust between a people and their government."

That doesn't sound very "radical left" to me. It sounds more fiscally conservative.

I worked for the campaign. I waited a long time for this day. No one is going to take this away from me.

Wallace,

I worked for the campaign the afternoon of the election.

Have you seen the list of new spending programs that Obama has proposed over the past year? If congress actually passed his entire agenda right now, we would more than double the size of the Federal government. That is a radical position, not moderate.

Obama voted in favor of post birth abortion three times. On three separate occasions Obama voted to kill living babies outside the mothers womb if the mother "intended" to have an abortion. That is a radical position, not moderate.

<---Look at the picture, what do you see? Do you see a Black woman? Let's be honest, seriously. Color is the first thing that comes to mind.

Some are saying that The President of The United States of America isn't Black. He is a Black man.

Some have said "let them have their day". Who is them and they? Silly me I was under the impression that WE ARE ALL AMERICANS. THUS it is OUR DAY.

Look at the picture, what do you see? Do you see a woman that is Irish, German, Danish, Spanish & Black? Since I am mixed suddenly I am no longer Black?

Woo Hoo! LOL! That's a good one, I'll have to remember that the next time someone calls me a N----- whether they say it out loud or the expression on the face let's me know they are thinking it.

Look at the picture, what do you see? I'll tell you what you SHOULD SEE an American Woman.

We are all in this together, we all have loved ones that have been affected in some shape, form or fashion.

Get over yourselves! Free your minds and the rest will follow!

Shalom!

Well said! I was waiting for you. flowerforyou

Fear and opposition to change. People with little imagination and no foresight of things possible.
PARANOIA of what they do not know!

That's what I see on this thread..
A Minority!

What if it's the lack of change that people recognize? What if Obama made his whole campaign about a cliche almost none of his policies support? I think it's justified whenpeople question this, as it's the people that have done their homework that truely recognize he offers no change... Correct me if i'm wrong of course...

It's fine to question these things down the road.

But...the OP and others were talking about him being black and one mentioned Muslim.

That's just plain ignorance.

Totally agree. It's so easy to get distracted by these small details that carry no actual significance. The media picks on small menial arguments, like "this guy is old" or "this guys was once a muslim" etc. and they don't actually talk about the issues. When they do bring up issues it's always very specific ones like anti-abortion/pro-abortion, discrimination in the workplace, a tax cut or two, the war in Iraq, etc.

Wouldn't it be nice if we got someone in office that looked at our political philosophies? Like our foreign policy as a whole, or general fiscal policy, or the economy as a whole (the fiat monetary system), or hell....maybe even realign ourselves with our own constitution...

Too bad every candidate that talked about these was written off as crazy by the media.

Ummmm....his campaign (Democrat) won the election. They won after the hard work of campaigning. We won - the campaign is officially over - he's President now.

Well..if you are going at it from that angle....what is wrong with a black person being happy that there is a black President for the first time in our history?

I voted for President Obama because I felt he was/is the best man for the job.
I'm white but I don't care if our leaders are black, white or tutti-fruiti, as long as the content of their character is solidly substantial and principled in the ways that count towards advancement of American's as a whole.
As a black man, he signifies that blacks can no longer claim that they can not advance themselves because of color, as he's risen to the highest office in the land and proved beyond a doubt that that's no longer the case.
As a man of mixed descent, it seems to me that he, above all people, transcends the polarity of white vs black.
Time will only tell but I'm counting on his example of leadership to significantly unite at least most Americans in a common goal.
I pray that his Presidency and administration is blessed with wisdom, courage, empathy and support.

It is a big deal as to how far we've come from separate drinking fountains in the 50's and the sundown towns that peaked in the 70's. It is a BIG deal.

Sheesh...even other countries know that it's a big deal for us to have our first black President.
