yeah its amazing that people dont understand but until you get to where you are in management i think it is hard for them to see the big picture. But small business owners get the shaft on this stuff too, its not a oneway street if anything its a oneway street going the other way!

rlynne- I agree with you to a point. But at what point do we take it upon ourselves to protect ourselves? I mean I don't expect you to know the law unless you're a lawyer. But maybe try and educate yourself enough to protect yourself. There's people I come across that still get paid less than min wage because they simply didn't know what the min wage was. then take it upon yourself to protect you and inform others who seem to be lacking said knowledge...sometimes the greatest aid for humanity is the passing of knowledge ![]() if you simply do not know it exists, you can't take it upon yourself....somebody has to inform you |

Yeah...MBA in HR. HOWEVER...I'm currently 'enjoying' sneaky, underhanded, insidious retalitation from a 'good old boys' network after rejecting an inappropriate advance from one of their members earlier in the year. Sometimes the law is tricky...although in the case you mentioned, not so. People really DO need to review the law, though! Protect yourself! AND DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT!!! THAT is the only way you can prove anything/make a case... In that case. . . ![]() I received my invitation to mediate before Christmas, but as far as I can tell, the company hasn't responded yet. I contacted the EEOC last week and they assured me that, with the holidays and weather, everything is on schedule. I'm affraid the company is stalling on purpose, they've been known to pull some very stupid tricks and I really don't want this dragging on any longer than it has to, it's bad enough that I lost my job because of it. |

Where I work, my boss will not fire anyone so they can't get unemployment. She will just start giving them less and less hours until they quit.

It's funny how the laws are written. For example, Illinois is an "at will" state. Which means, I don't have to promise you hours. I can fire you for any reason under the sun as long as it's not one of the protected rights (age, race, religion, etc) but ... no matter how crappy of an employee you are, I still have to pay unemployment when I fire you. I've fired people for so many things and almost always I have to pay unemployment. For example, if you're a housekeeper part of your job is changing the sheets on the bed. I have everyone sign a contract that they are responsible for all beds in the room. It tells you that upon catching you ONE time not changing sheets, you will be terminated. I've had to pay unemployment for firing a housekeeper that didn't change sheets.

So unfair! Yeah...they can drag for quite a while and it's so STUPID because if you get a halfway decent hearing examiner, they are gonna look very bad. your rights?? Your rights in the workplace? I interviewed a girl today for a housekeeping position that worked at another hotel before. She put on her application that she left there because she was pregnant. Upon questioning her, she innocently told me that her old boss told her to quit because she was a liability and afterall, how bad would she feel if she hurt her baby just for a job? Now of course, I only have her side of the story. However, so many times I have come across so many people that really do not know what their rights are in the workplace. By law they have to post your rights. |

I wouldn't care so much if the economy was in better shape and I stood a chance of getting back to work any time soon, but Unemployment doesn't cover everything (which I had to fight for) and Savings will only last so long. |
