I'm rather selective with whom I listen to with Rap, but yes, it is still music, no matter how much others may dislike it |

Rap is not my thing, think that all I own is some Outkast, Salt n' Pepa and Eminem. I esp. loathe the drive-bys that shake my bed, walls and fillings. Grrr-!
I'm such a sucker for melody, balladeers, instruments and tight/poetic lyrics. Still, good, bad or different it has earned its place in music history. And I take Canary's pt that some MIGHT be great w/ good lyrics. ? Perhaps I need to listen to the samples he suggests? Dunno.. I will say that, we Celts had our language forbidden and took Gaelic undercover into song. Think rap was, at least, born from similar angst and a legacy of storytelling pain - set to notes. Not everyone's cup of tea, not mine for sure. And I think it has really, obviously lowered the bar of music, fashion, culture and future. 4 people did get JUST stabbed at the NOTORIOUS film opening party. Don't even get me started on all the negativity and blatantly cruel put down lyrics, esp. as involves the black's own race & women. SO much hatred! Still, never walked in those moccasins. The stupidest part is the wanna-be whiteboys that have no measurable sense of angst, yet emulate as if... |

I like Weird Al's version of Gangster Paradise - especially the video. I did too, and that knucklehead Coolio got angry. Flipping idiot didn't even write the song. |

To each his own as to music. The part about rap that resembles inserting bamboo shoots up my fingernails is the lyrics about killing someone's mother and #$@#ng someone's sister. The screaming is also unpleasant. If I wanna hear someone scream, I'll go to work in my robe.

I will never say that rap like gangsta bs is cool and bs like soldier boy not havin any talent at all is good, this is what most of you that dont listen to rap hear and for that it is portrayed in a way that lyricists like myself are feeling the negativity also....and that is nobodys fault but the sh!t we hear on the radio today, but also understand that their is much more rap music with intellegent spoken lyrics and lyrics u can understand....im in the studio working on my mixtape and another thread i post in alot is the poetry thread, i do understand that others have givin us true poetic rappers a bad name, but do not judge a cover...and even if u dont like the clothes the jewelry basically just the style thats apparent to most rap musicians, then dont hate on that either...i like heavy metal and rock but u wont see me dressed in black leather with spikes on my wrist but i love all kinds of music. its sad that the hip hop world has been compromised by no talent artists.

Rap can be very poetic and artistic, however the problem is that the best rap music doesn't top the charts. Most people judge rap music based on the garbage on the radio, or the gangsta lyrics which make news stories.
It's a pity that people are so quick to judge a music genre that they know so little about. That's like saying that country music is hick music. Nothing but a stereotype. |

Those three words don't even have any business being in the same sentence together, let alone the same breath. |

Rap can be very poetic and artistic, Poetic and artistic does not necessarily mean musically viable. |

I'm not a big fan of Rap music.
But there are some talented people in this genre. A few of those are listed below: Afrika Bambaataa and the Soulsonic Force Melle Mel and Duke Bootee Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five Nas Common Talib Kweli Mos Def Eric B. & Rakim Run-D.M.C. Lupe Fiasco Chuck D. and many more.... I may not agree with the message of some rappers, but the messages are powerful and can be a positive influence. The Gangster Rap, not so much. |
