Topic: Your child is smoking pot | |

Fear - I wasn't trying to debate with you. Just trying to explain my opinion. For my daughter, it was deadly, she was on "self destruct" - it was taking her to much riskier and more damaging behavior. It may not for all people, but there are addictive personalities out there and for them it is dangerous, that is the point I was trying to make. Maybe 1 in 10, I don't know the stats, but there are addictive personalities that will respond to weed and get into the stronger stuff after using it. I have personally seen it happen. Again, I don't know the statistics. Each person is different. But, I wouldn't want to risk my kid's life on the chance that they were not going to get hooked and ruin their life because it is "not supposed" to be addictive.
Another problem would be if they got busted by the police, and were legal age, opens up another huge problem that will follow them lifelong. _________________________ Lone - glad you got off it. Welcome to the site. |

smoking pot is no worse than getting drunk but smoking daily 4 years is as bad as alcaholism. nothing is good when abused. i smoked weed every day 4 13 years and its messed with my mind but thats not to say it will do the same for everyone.were i live weed is grown indoors as we dont have the sun and as a result it contains much more thc wich is proven to give you the mong effect were as cananoboids give you the gigles, the stronger the thc consertration the more long term harm it will do, weed is NOT safe. no kid is going to listen to there parent about n e thing but i would sugest you never stop trying to get them to stop. get them out the house, get them into a sport find a mutual hobby and if all else fails start smoking it yourself as that will make it realy uncool ![]() There is no long term effects from marijuana. And it is by far better than getting drunk daily...of course moderation should be practiced. Marijuana doesn't "mess" with your mind, if you have pre-existing conditions it can set off triggers...but those are not long term, except for the condition you may have had in the first place. Ahh...but if one numbs one's feelings for many years, it does effect that person. |

Understandable Marie, I was just putting the fact out there that it has never been proven to more harmful than a cigarette. And, logically, it wouldn't as it contains less carcinogens than cigarettes.
People can have adverse reactions to anything, this doesn't mean we should limit looking into it. We need to look into the benefits as much as the negatives of marijuana, this helps in a neutral perspective rather than one driven completly from opinions and/or limited experience. Marijuana is a hallucinogen, as with any and all substances both legal and illegal a hallucinogen shouldn't be taken by people with pre-existing psychosis or any other mental disorder. The opinion I bring up is simply this, it is not lethal when in comparison to the likes of alcohol, cigarettes, or even advil. More people have died taking cough syrup. Within a responsible environment and with people keeping true to that responsibility it can be used and enjoyed just like alcohol. But, just like alcohol, when you take responsibility out of the equation and all you are doing is smoking daily all day...it can effect you both with health issues and personal issues. |

Ahh...but if one numbs one's feelings for many years, it does effect that person. How does one numb feelings? That usually requires nerve damage or a traumatic injury. The only effect marijuana has psychologically (and this had been proven, time and time again) is if there is a pre-existing psychological condition and of course the chance for psychological addiction. Even then it usually only occurs in those that didn't know of the condition, the addiction part can occur in anyone...but to be honest, I'd rather be psychologically dependent on marijuana than alcohol or an over the counter sleeping pill. |

fear...but then again we are talking about kids. you as an adult, might be able to separate things. but if a kid uses it as a "problem solver" it could lead to worse things.

Oh, please, it doesn't require nerve damage. It could even be a pill to do it. Pot can have a calming, numbing affect. Pot, alcohol, etc. are mood altering. When a person takes anything that affects one's self like that, they are not feeling 100% of the situation. When they quit, they have to learn how to deal with those feelings. |

I'm all for responsible use, and all for an age requirement if legalization ever happens. ![]() |

Marijuana doesn't alter your mood, it hightens chemical recievers in your brain typically leading to an abundance of laughter or giggling. If you are down and smoke weed, you will still be down regardless. It doesn't alter the chemical makeup in the brain like alcohol does. |

Why would one want that happening to a child when they are in school learning? It does affect one's mood. It usually makes them more mellow. Not always - everybody reacts differently to it. Why do would anyone want their children to be like that when they are supposed to be learning? I know somebody that recently quit smoking. He had been doing it since the 70's. Yes, it is an adjustment. He had to learn how to face life on it's own terms. He had to learn how to communicate socially without being high. |

Another concern is trusting your "dealer." What if it is "laced" with another drug. My daughter (at 13) was given a joint laced with "angel dust." It made her sick and scared the hell out of her luckily. Again, it was given to her by a 26 y/o man who wanted to "score" with her.
There are a lot of reasons I have issues with kids smoking pot or using any drugs, including alcohol. Their minds are still developing, have not matured yet. I guess you haven't lived until you have seen your young teenaged daughter falling down drunk in your yard, or have her disappear for days and come home high or drunk. Again, my issues, not debating your thoughts, but these are my issues why I don't believe kids should smoke pot, period!! My 2 cents anyways. |

On the other hand, I do advocate it for people with cancer and on chemotherapy. I understand it works well for their pain and the side effects of the chemo. But I also think it is abused by people claiming to have "chronic pain" who want medical marijuana too. Again, my 2 cents.

I didn't start smoking marijuana until I was 18, started smoking cigarettes a year before that and drinking 7 years before that. I've effectively kicked the drinking (do it once in a great while) still smoke cigarettes and smoke marijuana about three times a week and limit it to one joint each time. Like I said, practice responsibility. |

My ex never did (and he went through treatment 3 times), it killed him at 45, actually killed his heart, alcoholic cardiomyopathy. That is one of the reasons I have fought so hard to get and try to keep my daughter clean, she has the genetic predisposition. Also, good work on using responsibly. I have known many who don't. |
