I then downloaded media player and i can get sound from that, but still no system sounds I do not have any disc for this computer it seems I have missing files i found a site that has downloadable bootdisks (bootdisk.com) but don't know if it will work or really how to work with that. Go into the device manager,
Go to your audio controller, properties, it should say (this device is working properly) try to update it, and there is also a trouble shoot button, are you sure you speakers work ? |

Already updated driver there and it is working,
media player works thru the speakers sound properties have no sound playback have no sound |

Since you are hearing sound via MediaPlayer, your hardware is working correctly (soundcard and speakers). I would check your volume settings and your Sound Scheme (Control Panel - Sound and Audio Properties). Double check to see if any items are muted or at a low volume level.
When you say "playback have no sound", playback from what program? |

when I go to control panel, sounds, i can click on a noise but the play button is not highlighted.
As for the playback i go to control panel, multimedia, audio tab, none of the stuff is highlighted. I don't have a volume control any more either |

Sounds like a service pack gone wrong. Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> Click "show updates" -> Uninstall either service pack 2 or service pack 3. (Don't shut off, you will blue screen.) After finished, run you're updates again with windows update. Problem fixed. This is more than likely a bad service pack 3 install. More than likely an issue with DCOM. This should fix it. Post again if you need more instruction, those were pretty brief.

This computer has no service packs installed. except an internet explorer 6 SP1 and Internet tools
But I did find that when trying to install or uninstall a few programs it gives me .INF file is missing. I have a bootdisk will that help me? |

Bootdisk won't really help with your problem. The computer boots fine. You have a driver issue from the sound of it. Which of course you know.
If I understand correctly you are hearing sound through media player? |

If you are able (have a boot CD of Windows 98) find someone to help you and just reinstall your Windows 98, make back ups of everything personals and erase Windows. Personally I would install Window XP (if your computer can take it) instead of 98). Once you start having problems with your system files and can't uninstall programs and unless you know very well how Windows works it's always easier to just reinstall the whole thing and start fresh.
