Topic: Dang! | |

I just got a really nice initial mail from a guy who actually took the time to read my profile and wrote a thoughtful and coherent note, the problem, he is 79.
I wrote him a kind and respectful reponse, thanked him for actually reading my profile and for his kind e-mail, but thought our age difference was too great. He writes me a snotty note back saying it's too bad I have limitations and I obviously have a hang-up about age, telling me I would do well to look beyond age. I am the one on here preachin' think beyond your limitations, think outside the box! The only hang-up I have is dating someone who's old enough to be my father. |

Kudos to you for being kind and respectful.

Kudos to you for being kind and respectful. I wish there were more like you in the real world. I always respond to anyone who writes, which happens just about as often as a blue moon. I know rejection is hard to swallow for some, so I try to be kind AND honest. I'm beginning to see, tho, why some folks don't even bother responding back. |

I am the one on here preachin' think beyond your limitations, think outside the box! The only hang-up I have is dating someone who's old enough to be my father. I've noticed this as a fairly consistent theme -- people will have their standards (we all do), and someone else will say, "Oh, that's great!" UNTIL they end up being excluded by those standards. Then they tend to take it personally, as if this one specific qualification was set up strictly to keep this ONE PERSON out of the running. Seems a little egotistical on their part! If this guy had that sort of reaction to your honest opinion about the age difference, he's not the type you'd want anyway.... That's why, in my profile, I try to make it VERY CLEAR what I'm looking for. I would prefer there to be NO DOUBT, so it isn't like the other site where 174 people wrote to me in three months, and not one was even remotely suitable -- because they didn't read my profile. Not everybody reads my profile here, either, but the ones who do, know fairly quickly that I have some serious standards of my own....and I think that keeps the signal-to-noise ratio manageable.... |

Told him, Well, that's nice, someone is nice enough to respond to you in a kind and respectful and ya gotta be a jerk and that he was right, it isn't always about age, sometimes it's maturity. |

You guys get email? Yeah, you saw the part where I said it happens about as often as a blue moon, right? |

You guys get email? I get lots of e-mail -- most of it from friends in the forums, some of it is about my profile, some of it is moderator stuff, some of it is about my writing....none of it is ever some cute local girl saying "I like you and I'm totally willing to do your laundry." You can't have everything. |

Ya have a good point, Lex. Maybe I need to be more clear about my standards. |
